Well....wouldn't normally venture out but it's Olivers B'day tomorrow and we are clean out of food.
Was going to hike up to Sainsbury's with rucksak, but as snow and wind keep getting up and I didn't fancy it, so I ventured on foot down to the A21 to see how clear. Wasn't that clear but traffic was very light so thought I would go for it in the car. The Seat Altea was still covered in snow and has been since early this week...thought 4WD, the Scoob and nigh empty roads would be alot more fun. Going was fine with very light trafffic....only 2 Morrisons and 1 Sainsbury lorry stuck on the A21 on the hill !!! Returning was different, everyone was out and que's had built up back towards home. due to this decided to go my normal route but more challenging route up Ledsham Ave...this is quite a steep road but tracks were already cut through, so thought someone else has made it, so lets go for it. Things went well and I said to my son "this is easy....yeee harr!!!!! thank god for 4WD". Then about half way up it stopped, and started to spin all 4 wheels. I had a parked car on my left and when I stopped and put the foot on brake the car started to slide backwards towards the main A21 and the nose of the car also swung round about 45 Degree's towards parked cars....Oops !!!! not good I thought. I managed to get the arse of car pointed into another close but the front then came round even further.......then it stopped phew!!!!!! Reversed cars back wheels up onto pavement in order to level thing out a bit....... I then managed to turn the car round and thought about abandoning.....but nowwhere to park safely and didn't fancy leaving the car behind..... So pointed it back down Ledsham and towards the A21, 1st gear and hope. Running down hill...well sliding down hill it was a case of try 1st gear, try not to touch brakes...instinct then has you touching the brakes as sliding speed builds up...car goes left...car goes right...car goes sideways. Arse end kiss's the kerb...bloody low profiles take no prisoners......crunch a bit of alloy gets left behind. At this point I am on the horn warning people on the A21 I'm coming. Thankfully I managed to reduce the slide and speed enough to stop 10ft before the junction. What amazed me was I was clearly sliding, on the horn, yet drivers on the A21 just seems to look at you and continue..thank god I stopped. Alloy has a inch long gash on the rim, but not too bad considering the situation and the same rim I have hit twice before. A bit of my special mix of Ford champagne gold and Vauxhall graphite (bloody Bright Flitter PFF7's, why didn't I get a silver alloys), and they will be fine. Thankful tho', as it could of been alot worse, with the gradient of that hill it could of had me flying across the A21 collecting a few cars and potentially into what are very steep gardens on the other side. Take it easy out there...and don't take 4WD for granted. Last edited by Scott.T; 09-01-2010 at 11:47 AM. |

Mate, not good.Although sounds like you got away with minimal damage thank god.
Land rover about the only thing you can truly rely on. I have just caught train from uckfield to erdige, set off to walk to eridge park and had only been walking 5 mins up hill, guy stops in range rover and offers me a lift, pulled away like it was on tarmac, very impressed seeing as there were cars littered on the a26. What a gent i thought. |

Hastings is shocking, i was out on Sedlescombe road at about 8.45am this morning,
Had already been from Westfield to Battle Rd to pick a mate up, then into Battle, then out to Johns Cross, up the A21 then along the A265 to Etchingham and back through Battle, down Battle rd. Had to get back to Westfield from Battle rd,got upto Sedlescombe rd and like you road was blocked by arctics. Managed to get up Harrow Lane, As i type this just started snowing again. A28 in Westfield is crap!

Very nasty nick.....(wasn't he on Big Brother).
Wheel size and offset and stud pattern will be stamped on the on the inside, normally on the back of one of the spokes. It should have, I expect : 7.5x18, ET48 (offset) and PCD 100 somewhere...... What make are they ? I think I know, but on tip of tongue. They were quite a popular wheel a few years back when classics 1st started fitting 18's. Last edited by Scott.T; 09-01-2010 at 12:18 PM. |

Gutted for you mate, but could have been much worse. Even 4wd has it limits, and once you start to slide it dont make any difference if its 2wd, rwd, or 4wd there is not allot you can do but hold on tight and hope for the best.!
Scoobs are amazing in this weather, but they have there limits. Went for a long walk earlier down public foot paths and finally popped out on battle road, and it was that bad when I did come out onto battle road, I couldn't immediately tell it was battle road. It looked more like a country lane due to the amount of snow and lack of cars about. Kids were taboganning down the main battle road. Main roads around hastings are now absoloutley covered and nothing but 4wd are even remotely getting about. Hastings is proper snowed in. Glad I got my new alloys and shopping yesterday ![]() Got a card for Oliver here but will have to drop it round probably after his birthday now. |

i agree with whats been said - 4wd is useless once you're already sliding! had a few near moments where the back has slid towards the kerb but luckily no damage. I've hit the kerb once but luckily there was a lot of icey snow in the gutter it seems to have cushioned the impact and i got away with it.
If we get more snow tomorrow i can see people still being off work into next week..... |

ET48 and 7x18 sounds about right.
PCD will be 100, or should I say 5x100. You can go to 8x18 but offset needs to be ET51 min on 225 width tyres. 7.5x18 can get away with ET48 but no lower on 215 width tyres. RobEvo5 has just picked up another set of wheels, so ping him a PM as he has some 7.5x17 Speedline ST2's you may be able to borrow. He's also just off 'The Ridge' Hastings. |

Sorry Nick -But to be honest with all this snow and talk of curbed alloys. I'm looking to keep my current set on the car gold (St2's), until this snow clears up. They already have a fair few light curb marks and paintwork isn't great. So at the moment I wouldn't be that worried if I picked up any more marks so prefect for my needs for just now.
Once the snow clears I'll put me new alloys on, and was probably going to refurb my old ones at some point or just keep them as track alloys. So sorry but not really available just now. Ironically I did have a set of stock alloys for ages, and let them go for peanuts a while back because they were in my way... sorry I can't help on this occassion. |

On a side note, it might be worth looking at the alloys only packages and sourcing tyres elsewhere - thats what i did because the "budget performance" tyres those bundles come with are pretty terrible. |

The company on ebay you linked to
![]() They do the same alloys as in your link but without tyres for £394, so you can use the tyres you've already bought. |

lol yeah seen em, gonna use the tyres of my existing alloys as they practically brand new, existing alloys are 7x18 but these are 7.5x18
will they fit? |

what is the actual tyre size you've got now? i think most people use 215 or 225 tyres on 7.5x18, if yours are slightly narrower then they'll still fit but they might look a bit stretched and they'll give you less rim protection from future kerb attacks
