2.5 have a read up mate.. That's a choice only you can choose. I went for an older but sti for the reason the 2ltr being alot stronger

I don't think the WRX has the same issues as the 2.5 STI. The piston problems seem to be limited to the STI as it is producing more power with a more aggressive map. Having said that I ran my hawk STI for 6 years running upto around 350bhp with no issues at all.
It looks a nice car but if you drive it back to back with a classic it wont feel that quick as its a lot heavier and a lot more refined. If you are buying it with a view to getting more power out of it later then I would save yourself the money and bother and just get an older 2.0 WRX or STI and that will be a better base. If you are buying it to drive and enjoy, then its a nice car.

I have an '06 WRX with the 2.5l engine in and I'd agree with Lucky that the 2.0l engines are probably stronger. The 2.5l engine is great for bags of torque once it's remapped, mine was running 330 lbft with just 280bhp, BUT......
There is a very common problem with the oil pickup - it is prone to fracturing, causing bottom end failure (spun crank shaft, etc) The only way to detect it is to look at the oil pressure @ idle... Mine nearly failed and I only knew because I'd fitted a gauge. even then it spun the bearing on No 3... Second issue is that the 2.5 is prone to ringland failure, which has also just happened to mine! 2 broken pistons, ruined inlet valves, spun crankshaft bearing, etc etc Now having a rebuild, and wishing I'd bought a 2l car!.. But then again you may never have any problems, and other than that, it's all good... HTH. J.

Thanks for all the input guys, I'm not getting it for me it's for the misses, I have classic in my vains through and through.. (It's a child hood thing). We are selling the 2.5 focus st for a Scoob..

You can pick up a blob wrx with ppp kits fairly cheap now mate. Seen a few with good millage for around £3500.
Pros, cheaper tax, better engine and cheaper, Hawk pros, better looking,newer, and tourque is more so easier driving at lower rpm. But the main issue is the gamble of known engine failure. You hear some that go for miles but others that we'll die hard. I have to say the newage is much nicer for daily driver.

I don't necessarily agree that a hawk looks better than a blob personally, but it's all very subjective!
Both are good lookers if done properly.
