Question I need help & Advice

Hello

Right here goes.. My car as developed a type of whining Noise u would discribe as a whistle that on exeleration gets louder, when doing about 25 in second, sounds like blowing into a beer bottle,or a pan pipe,if im going at any speed and then dip the clutch it goes..

So took it to a fella, who took it for a run,and said its the Gearbox bearing that goes from the gearbox to the Diff "if that makes sence" and has quoted me around £500 to do the job,and thats cash..Is this the going rate for that job???

So does this sound right or could it be something else as i dont want to fork out that dosh,if it not the bearing..Or can anyone recommend someone to give me a second opinion...

Thanks Trace

i know where u can get a recon box for 295. fitting extra. if it is just the bearing on the rear output shaft, £500 seems excesive. if its on the shaft 2 ur front diff, then that means takin the box out n opening it up so £500 dont seem so bad then, but like i said, i know where u can get a recon for £295 n if he's takin the box out 2 replace the bearing 2 the front diff, may as well get a recon box fitted instead.

n ive never heard a failing bearing make the sound u described. i'd definately hold fire on forkin out any cash till u get someone else 2 listen 2 it n give u a second oppinion.

my box failed last week n i am about 2 fit a recon unit. when it went, it didnt sound like u described at all. mine was a gear whine, louder in 2nd n 3rd, only present on acceleration. the pitch of the whine was linked to wheel speed, not engine speed.

The blowing over a beer bottle sound is usually the dump valve leaking, check that too
