It drives like a beast, well at least up to 4,000rpm - it's definitely different to my old 2003 WRX, all I did to that was 18" wheels and the PPP was done in 2004.
I'm annoying myself with the gear shift, with the occasional "oh yeah I have 6th duh". Having driven the same wonderful car for 13yrs I have some stubborn habits to break, and if I go from 5th to 2nd one more time, I'll give it back Went for an early evening spin on the twisties today and it was great fun. We have some cracking roads around here - hence a few of the tyre makes have bases here. Being a bit of a geek and loving tech, was very much entertained by the magic lights i.e. automatic dipping. Satnav is pants though Not sure about the ring yet, need to get my trip back to the UK next week out of the way first and see how time/money are. But it would be nice to pop over for at least one of the days you're there. Whether I can brave an actual lap.......yup, been here 14yrs and have never been round but have visited a few times. I'll put a better report together later, but the drive down to Calais was as good if not better than with my WRX, partly due to the cruise control saving my feet. I even managed to use about the same amount of fuel as with the WRX but I was being pretty frugal by using the cruise control. And then there's the ride once I crossed the Channel - how does anyone drive something like the STI in Kent? Crashing about on the country roads from Ashford to Tunbridge Wells, and some major ones was an eye-opener, and I almost missed a gear change at one point. I always felt it was harsher to drive the WRX in the UK than in Luxembourg, but not to this extreme.

Yeah Kent itself is great, I'm TWells born and bred, but the roads are as ****e as they were when I left 2002, if not worse and they'd been deteriorating over the previous two decades.

The roads are terrible, I've burst or put bulges in 6 tyres in the last 5 years although that's more Sussex than Kent. On the subject of good beer, the bar on the newly reopened Hastings pier serves Harvey's so all is good.

I remember back in the late 80s they resurfaced the roads so badly around Edenbridge in the spring, that in the summer the tarmac melted and it was like driving through water for about a week. And don't get me started on repairs that use loose stone chips and why like many places in the EU they haven't banned the practice.

It's now two weeks, but I wrote the following after one week but never had a chance post it. I will leave it here and then add my thoughts from after another week.
So it's been a week since I got my new 2016 STI and so I thought I should put down some notes on the experience so far. Some of this will be personal to me and not really a reflection on the car itself. I had driven the same WRX for 13 years (a wonderful MY03 from new, part-ex'd with just 86,000Km) and some habits are just difficult shift, and it doesn't help that I am always a nervous driver when it comes to unfamiliar vehicles. So, in no particular order:And so after two weeks I'm nearly at 1,400km thanks to my current trip back to the UK, but I'm still not going to push the car. The dealer told me it wouldn't be necessary but I'm going to get the oil changed when I return and will then consider it "run in". Further thoughts: * Lights, converting to LED I have changed: full beams, interior light, map lights, reversing lights, licence plate lights, boot lights. Waiting on a new flasher unit so I can change the indicators. I'm having issues with the bulbs required for the front and rear fog lights, and the daytime-running-lights (the ones I got are too big or long). I wrote before how good the dipped beams were, the new full beams improve things there as well. * Sat-Nav, really annoyed by this. The map data is two years old and so I have been given an email contact in Subaru Belgium by my local dealer and sent them a letter of complaint. * Ride and Handling, I'll be glad to leave Kent this week and return to the 21st century. I had a near perfect trip to Calais and got there feeling fairly good, but by the time I got to Tunbridge Wells I felt like every muscle on my body had been punched. It's a travesty that the roads have not improved one bit in the 14 years I've been away with many roads I knew very well from my youth 30 years ago are basically in the same state. I always used to notice some difference with the road quality driving my old WRX, but the STI is not so forgiving. * Fuel Economy, wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, but for my trip to Calais the tank was down to a quarter just as I used to get with the WRX. I think a lot of this was making good use of the cruise control and keeping to the Belgian and French speed limits. I'm pretty sure that if I tried to use the car as a daily driver like I used it that it would not be as good. But that's ok. The fuel-low light comes on at 10 litres and the trip computer seems to be pretty accurate so far and showing my range. * STI floor mats and English owners manual, are waiting for me to pick up when I get home. |

Got to say that is one of the most in depth reviews ive seen
![]() Great write up and glad to hear your comparisons, and honest opinions on what is good and bad with the new motor. Im glad the fuel economy wasn't as bad as you thought, and im sure the gadgets and gizmo's will come into there own. Having a bug, I often wonder what it must be like to have modern day comfort and technology alongside the power e.t.c. - perhaps one day I will find out. Ryan

Here's my spreadsheet for reference: https://goo.gl/qXWECq I'll add a shot from the English manual once I pick it up later this week. They were all sourced from eBay, the same seller I used for the replacements for my WRX apart from the interior bulbs (as I wanted 28mm festoons). If you're aware of any good suppliers this side of the atlantic I'd be interested to see if they do alternatives for the fogs/drls which will actually fit. The problem with the US is that their lights are not the same and vary more depending on on model and spec. |

Are there no canbus issues with the LEDs or have Subaru steared away from going down that route? I know the VAG stuff can get quite upset if you start messing about with the bulbs.
I've got Hill Assist on my Passat and it does take a bit of getting used to, I'd rather it only worked going uphill rather than up and down. The biggest problem now is getting in a car without it and forgetting to put the Handbrake on. The technology advancements in cars in the last 10 years is frightening, not sure all of it is for the better. Very good write up though, looking forward to seeing future updates. |

So today I drove across the boarder to Germany to see a friend, and gave the car a quick clean to de-bug the front end after my drive back from the UK. As I live in an aparment block I have nowhere to clean it so unless I pay an extortionate amount to have it valeted, this is how I have to keep it clean. I took the time to also install the intercooler guard:
And as I also discovered some unused shorter although red LED bulbs I was able to replace the halogen in the rear fog light. Here it is lit up along with the now enormously bright LED reversing lamps: What you can't see is that the rear fog as a small triangle of bright spots which kind of looks cool. |

Nearly fully LED'd, just the front fog/DRLs which I'm struggling to get LEDs that fit the holes - I have the "correct" fittings, but the aperture into light housing is too small. The only ones I have seen that are supposedly guaranteed to fit are from a site in Australia which makes the postage a little much.
Once I got the new flasher unit installed the LED indicators slowed down to normal, but unfortunately I now suffer the reported long first flash which in itself I can deal with as I had it with my old WRX, but it means the built-in "3 flash lane change mode", now does "long", "normal", "very short", so it's simply a timing thing. I think I can live with it for now until I can find an alternative that doesn't involve any modification other than a correctly functioning flasher unit. Maybe one of the adjustable ones. I will see about getting some video of all the lights in action, so hopefully if the rain ever stops I can get that done. On the subject of rain, more of the "magic" shows up when I left my wipers on "intermittent" today on parking up. I went out after lunch and it wasn't raining, the wipers were not wiping, and then just as it did start to come down and I was about to switch them on myself, the car did it for me. It then proceeded to time the wipes flawlessly during my trip on the motorway, adjusting to my speed and the amount of rain coming down, even slowing/stopping going through a tunnel and when stopped at lights. Even the RainX didn't seem to phase it. My only fear is if/when all these gadgets start to go wrong, but I think Subaru have only included much that has been around a few years so I would hope some of the reliability kinks will have been ironed out. |

I added a few new pictures to album, see first thread for link, after I went for a blast around the countryside yesterday. It was Luxembourg's national day so off work, and as it was such a nice day (sunny and 30+), I thought I would go out and find a spot to take a few pictures. I also needed something new to replace the picture of my old WRX I have on my bank debit card. Unfortunately it had rained on Monday so the car wasn't as clean as I'd like but it didn't deter me. I found somewhere with a nice view and took some shots.
As for the car itself, some more insights:

Got all the LEDs except for the fog/DRLs done, and fitted a replacement flasher unit that was adjustable which fixes the long flashes. Lane change flasher now works correctly.

Today I fitted some ArmorRally mudflaps I picked up on my trip back to the UK at the weekend. Were pretty easy to fit, the fronts were harder than the rears and could be done by just turning the wheels to one side, the rears were easier but really needed me to remove the wheels to be sure I could tighten up the one screw that's required. I took some pictures here but the lighting isn't very good and my camera phone didn't get great shots.

So it's finally 10,000km time - boy did that go quick, and probably the most distance I've done in one year for a very very long time. Well......it's an STI.
Last week I finally could revert back to the summer wheels and tyres - the winters were great for grip, performance, comfort but were extremely noisy. I'd rather have the slightly harder ride of the summer's than the noise. I still love the car, that is when I get to drive it - it's not a daily driver as it makes no sense when the bus to work is far more economical, though I make sure to drive to work mid-week, then of course when I can at the weekends. I'm not planning any further modifications, though as and when I see minor things I can improve I will do so, for example I have a replacement fuse-box over as the one below/to the side of the steering wheel isn't a coin-box. For some inexplicable reason Subaru didn't fit them and it's a costly part for something so small. So I'm getting a much cheaper Chinese knock-off which I hope will do the job. I'm also getting a tray that fits inside the arm-rest to make better use of the space and some seat space fillers as I keep dropping things down beside the seat/handbrake and it's getting on my nerves - they're quite narrow and not easy to reach down when driving. |
|
#60
|
|||
|
|||
|
Finally got myself a coin holder replacement for the fuse-panel, not sure why Subaru left this out as well:
It was a cheap one from China but surprisingly good quality, it even has Subaru stamped into it. The only thing missing is the fuse layout sticker, which I have taken a photo of and will fabricate a replacement sticker. Also, as a way to get free delivery from AliExpress, I ordered a couple of other small bits: Got fed up of losing things down the side of the seats and having to wait until I stopped to struggle to retrieve things - the seats much tighter against the centre-tunnel than my old WRX was which made it easier to fetch things back. Lastly, something to cover up the door catches: |

Looking good. My coin holder had fuse schematics, but it was older revision than mine, though I bought it from Subispeed. And those plastic covers in the doors look much nicer than metal shiny ones
Between seat and center consoles I am planning to get a pocket for phone or something else. Hm, your seats are different. |

My manual shows only 5w30 recommended, with 5w40 being temporary for short term if the 5w30 isn't available (and replaced as soon as), no mention of 0w30. My investigations into 0w30 when they used it last year at 1,500km did say it was definitely fine and would be better for low temp starts (it can get to -20 in the winter sometimes here, although that's rare and I park underground).

Mine was Castrol Titanium I think, though next time I will get Shell equivalent and yes 5w30 is better for cold weather starts while 5w40 is better for hot water running. This is what I wrote in a previous post last year:
"The various versions of the 2016 WRX/WRX STI manuals, which includes US/Canada, Australia, Japan (English), Benelux (French) all say the standard oil for the STI should be 5W30, with use of 5W40 only for a short time and flushed out as soon as possible. Having said that, when I hunted around looking for 0W30 many sites say it an alternative for 5W30 for lower temperature climates, but I didn't see anyone saying it would be bad for the car. The "0W" being more fluid and hence better lubricating on cold starts. The extremely important figure is the "30" and how it behaves when the engine is at normal temperature. My feeling is that I don't think it's a problem, but I will contact the garage on Monday and just confirm things with them." Sent from my Nexus 9 using Tapatalk |

At the time they said it was fine and just as I suspected that the important figure was the "30" (and matched the Subaru recommendation) and that the "0" was for the lower temps we tend to get through the winter. Many of their customers go away at the winter skiing so having better cold protection was important, if a little bit more expensive. However if I was a regular track-day user, I'd be looking to get a "w40" but that'll never be me. At the end of the day, I'm relying on the dealer who have been very good to me for the last decade and if they screw up it will be them that have to rectify the problem. |
