Default Dash Cams

Looking to record my drive to Italy, can anyone recommend any decent dash cams? Not looking to spend hundreds if I'm honest...

Also how do you run them? Plugged into the cig lighter? Battery run?

Do you want it to capture possible accidents etc. or are you hoping to capture the journey for playback later. I think a lot of the dash cams record on a loop (I may be wrong) so will start over writing previous recordings. If you want to record the trip for posterity then go for a Go Pro if you're feeling flush or one of the Chinese clones like the Qmox SJ series which a few people on here have and are really impressed with.
