Think this should be about right

1995-97 Subaru Impreza Stereo Wiring
Constant 12V+ Blue/Yellow
Switched 12V+ Yellow/Red
Ground Black
Illumination Green
Dimmer n/a

Front Speakers
Left Front (+) Brown/White
Left Front (-) Green/Black
Right Front (+) Red/Yellow
Right Front (-) White/Black
Rear Speakers
Left Rear (+) White/Red
Left Rear (-) Red/Green
Right Rear (+) Blue/Green
Right Rear (-) Red

On the sony ,, probably better to google the model no for full wiring diagram in order to get the speakers and everything correct

I might just take it to someone to wire it up for me as it will be safer than me doing it .

I'd do what Benji suggests, one you've got the original bit of wiring back in, just get to Halfords and get a Iso Block, there universal with all stereos now.

Thats true ,, doing it that way you would be joining up same colour wire to same colour ,,, would be nice and easy

Have you got a test meter or a 12v bulb with wires on ? If it was me id just check that all 3 black wires dont have 12v either when car switched off or ignition on ,,, presuming none do one at least ought to be a good earth

It sounds like whoever hacked your wiring up used the yellow/red which is the wire that becomes live when your ignition is on to power up the cigarette lighter

This wire is important to a stereo as if you didnt have a switched live and just connected your two power wires on the stereo end to 12v constant your stereo would not switch on and off with ignition and could possibly flatten the battery etc

I would splice a wire off that yellow/red from the car loom and it should connect to the one on the sony stereo marked ignition live

Tbh its a bit tricky to say what you should do if you dont have a test meter/ lamp or bulb etc as its easily possible to damage a headunit by putting 12v in the wrong wire so if in doubt defo dont just connect things up if unsure
