Default Engine oil

After some advice please chaps.

So I was advised to use 5-40w engine oil on scoobynet, but today after going to Halfords the guide said magnatech 5-30w fully synthetic. I checked with the advisor and he looked on his computer and said it was correct so I went with the 5-30w.
Should I stick with this? Bog standard 2004 wrx if it makes a difference.

Cheers in advance,

Iain

you'd be better with a 5w40 as above

I'm sure the Subaru book says 5w30 in the service information, yet when i had my scoob serviced by a main dealer (admitted just after i bought it) they used 10w40 instead.
