I will be changing the exhaust, its way to quiet for my liking, will probably be another afterburner vortex, its just a loverly sound track . I havnt got any other major plans for it though other than sorting out a couple of issues that Ive noticed since getting it home.

Thats not good. I love P1's and when I get a scoob sorted there is still a chance it may be a P1, but what is it with P1 engines. You dont hear it with other late classics, but P1's all seem to have issues? Really hope you get it sorted, really unlucky on day one

It was a private sale. The car has only done 68,000 miles as well which is a shocker. I guess its just one of those things. I would of at least expected some sort of warning from the guy as hes part of a well known club, but I guess that when the £ signs are up, honesty goes out of the window.

Not high mileage at all really, is he a Memeber on the P1woc?, try and find out a bit more about the car and the previous owner.

I'd still be contacting the previous owner and looking for some sort of money back or a deal towards getting the engine sorted.

How can someone be so dishonest like that!

You do still have the option of suing the seller.

I know for the money involved it may seem a fag, but I bet you the threat of that will get a reaction.

thats wrong! you cant tell me the seller wasnt aware of impending problems a few days ago... sure iv read something somewhere about reclaiming your money in situations like this, even on second hand cars..from private sellers, once youve paid over a certain price..

Sorry to hear that mate. As soon as I read your post above about it being totally standard I did wonder how healthy it's big-ends may be.

It's one of the reason's I didn't go for a P1 when I was looking last year. There were some nice ones about but I wasn't keen on a standard one for this very reason and those that had been 'built' were just far to much money.

Time to think about a 2.1 stroker from slowboy

It's very difficult to prove, and as we all know (and the reason for my recent post in technical about Big-Ends) they can just go, and Subaru's are quite good at it.

My classic spun a big end about 3 weeks after I sold it. Now I will never get to the bottom of how the new owner was driving it at the time, but what I do know is it was fine when it left me, with only 54000 miles on the clock.

I did have a spare engine (although 3 pistons were shot) that I let the guy have to help him sort it, as being me I felt sorry for the guy and the spare engine was no use to me being a 2.0 and I'd moved on to a 2.5.

Turned out alright for me though as I ended up buying the car back 18 months later with STi rods, Nitrided crank and ACL bearings

Despite the rumours that Prodrive changed the maping the P1 ECU is the same map as a STi V6 and hence the timing/fuelling are quite aggresive for UK fuel, they are also prone to MAF issues and the 2 don't go well together. It's probably more a Map then MAF problem though TBH.

Just a thought before you jump in feet first.
Make sure it's not the cambelt tensioner as the MY99/00 tensioner has a habit of going soft.
The knocking you hear is the tensioner plunger bouncing off the engine case/webbing where it should normally push tight against.

Mine doen this after 20000 miles and hasn't done it again since a new design tensioner was fitted.

It wouldn't be the first time this was mis-diagnosed.
The engine in Worzel's car (before he bought it) was taken out of a Hawkeye STI by a Subaru dealer with expected Big End failure only for Daz Davis to strip it and find it was a tensioner failure.

Fingers Crossed for ya.......

That is a very tidy looking P1 you have got yourself there mate, sorry to hear about the engine problem and I hope it all works out for you. I must say I'm a bit jealous really as I world love to get my hands on a nice P1.

A little update. Hopefully tomorrow will be the start of rebuilding the engine with forged parts, should make for a much stronger engine. Although Ive hit a snag trying to get samco hoses. RCM seem to be out at the moment of the ones I need. Still at a cross roads whether to get a different ECU or keep the standard one in there since it will be getting a safer remap to the factory one.
