Default Td05 18g

Hi all

Just after some advice on turbo + intercooler upgrade I'm thinking about getting.

It seems a bit of a minefield with turbos and I guess it all depends on what you're after. My main goal is to achieve around 390 (maybe more) with a fast spool - if possible.

Currently I have a vf23 which is great but I have been told that 340 is probably the limits of the turbo?
I will be getting a FMIC soon from Japspeed, as they seem relatively affordable.

My question is: would a TD05 18G be a good turbo for this figure? They seem relatively cheap, and I am setting aside approx. £600 for a turbo. I know billet turbos are 'the ones' to get, but I don't think I can afford one just yet.

Any ideas or recommendations is greatly appreciated. My knowledge on turbos is limited and so thought best to ask here first!

Correct on rough limit of vf23. I might go 20g of some varient to hit your goals comfortably. I currently run an st420 which is a 20g variant essentially. John @ BRD would be a good first stop though.

If 390 is your goal then a 20g really (Andy forest or Harvey smith one if you can find it) or perhaps an MD321T with the boost set around 1.3 bar

Forgive me if I'm wrong but for fast spool wouldn't he be better off fitting a newage top mount and getting something like an SC38?

Yer I did read somewhere that fmic can sometimes cause lag.

I think as mine is a v3 theres a fair bit of work to get a newage top mount to fit, but definitely considering this. I think I might stay with the vf23 and get a larger tmic fitted and go from there. The vf23 seems to be quite good all round - I recon with a map tweak and newage tmic fitted I may see a bit more power maybe not 380 but hopefully 340ish. Is that a realistic aim?
Decisions decisions lol
Cheers all

Indeed it can but it all depends on if the difference in lag between tmic and fmic is enough to worry about or make a difference to your requirements. If it's a lot of greif to fit a newage tmic, it may be better just to go fmic and also future proof at the same time? I've not really modded mine much but anyone that has will all say, think about what you want and do it once. It gets expensive when you keep changing bits!
