PF Discs
Fitted my PF discs to the Bug today, was meant to be for the R, but I couldn't just leave them sat there....
Took it for a test drive, and oh dear, massive wobble under light and heavy braking. Thought, no worries, whipped them off again, rubbed the face of the hub with sand paper, made as smooth as possible, did the same to the backs of the alloys. Still the same wobble. Warped discs?

Don't think there's much else that would cause a wobble especially if it was fine on the previous discs?

Been running the groved discs on my project thread for 3 years, no issues. These discs where skimmed before i bought them, so cant see how they are warped, unless the skimming went horrifically wrong.

Not going to lie i've had a similar issue with mine on my classic. And they were brand new etc and from Alyn. Just need to get the chance to get them off, packed, and sent to him for inspection and skimming? Just does not make sense to me as I bedded them in and everything properly.
One thing Alyn did explain to me is that the particular disc mounting location can change runout by quite a bit....by rotating the disc fitment point a hole or two? Either way welcome to the club. |

My AP discs were skimmed.... Made no difference and wobbled, I've just changed to new

Warped discs are the Bain of my life with my Subaru. Don't even brake hard yet they still go. On my third set of discs in two years of owning, one set had been skimmed too. Sick of it tbh!

The set I've got on ATM are from Alyn, still warped. I read that the brembo's are so bulky they struggle to dissipate heat which is what causes it. Fitting two piece like the PF's sort's that. For what they will cost me with pads, I can sell my brembo's and buy a set of pro r six pot Alcons which are much better brakes. That's the route I'm hoping to take.

Are they definitely warped?
As far as I know, actual warping is quite rare. What did you do to bed them in? |

very unlikely to be warped discs, although not completly un heard of, most of the time it is uneven transfer of pad material to the disc,
If they are the 2 part PFC discs and bells, I would be very surprised if they are warped, they manage to stop my car lap after lap at Spa deploying the brakes very hard from over 130mph The correct bed in procedure is a little mad though!

They're just standard one piece discs. Not 100% if they're definitely warped but going by what my last set were like, I'd be absolutely amazed if they're not. Started out fine, then gradually got worse and worse until in Germany when they became borderline unbearable! The set before were definitely warped and these feel the same if not worse. They've actually shaken my dash loose and I now have a really annoying rattle!

As for bedding in, I was gentle with them for the first fifty miles or so then used them normally. I was more a straight line man than quick through the corners so don't or didn't use them heavily. Only a few times have I had to really step on them. Since Germany I've got to know the car and it's capabilities a lot better and now drive quicker through the twistys (all within legal limits of course) so need this on going issue sorted

Not going to lie I bought mine from AS, bedded in , and they seem to have warped rather quick. Maybe as Dave says its uneven pad material distribution, but will see soon. As I said been in touch and Alyn said I could send them so will be doing so soon. And yes, mine were expensive.
But they don't squeek quite as bad as steve's (even though we both have PFC 08 pads ; ) |

I think we are talking about different types of brakes/pads for each other, Morts, Stu, Chris, Ian and I are running different stuff I think with different bed in procedures.
Ian and myself are running PFC 2 piece discs and bells, with PFC Z-11 pads I believe. Not the same as solid discs at all, But the principles for uneven pad transfer are the same for warping/not warping new sets of discs of course. Which discs have you fitted Mort?

Out of interest, have you checkeg that there is no movement between the disc and bell?
On one of mine I had to renew the springs that hold the disc to the bell.

as general rule then as above true "warped" discs are uncommon although it does and can occur.........more common is thickness variance or un-even pad deposits
PFC have extremely stringent QS standards as well as being one of the few (possibly only) people to carry out a full heat treatment process of their rotors meaning any issues are virtually 0%.......... far more common to incur problems by incorrect fitting, seized/damaged calipers or incorrect run-in procedure (needs to be specific to the MANUFACTURER your using not just your mate billy's advice ) with any 2pce disc then we would strongly recomend checking the run-out of the hubs and discs upon installation as this can/will cause "warped" symptoms if out of tolerance finally be aware of poor quality "copy" components used with genuine rotors as we have seen numerous issues due to poor quality material/machining processes used

Well, changed the pads today, went from the sealed box, into the calliper, with no contact on the pad surface.
Followed the posted bedding in guide, still exactly the same...

if you have a vibration/warp type issue simply changing pads will generally have no effect at all as you have found............

You can test the "run-out" with a dial test indicator on the car, not sure of the tolerance but guessing about 0.1 mm on the out side of the disk. You may have a badly machined set off disks from the manufacturer ?

Have you been in touch with him? Seen the For Sale thread and can see he mentioned that they needed skimming so i guess they were causing him problems before.

Hi all,
Just seen this thread, the PF discs in question were not causing me any problems what so ever, car had been standing a while when I brought it this year in January, when ever I buy a car within months I put new brakes and tyres on for my piece of mind. Wasn't sure what to do with them and advertise for anyone who knows where to get them skimmed and a guy from southampton offered to do them for free at work, he told me he took 15 thou off and they were good to go, I'm no expert so sold the freshly skimmed discs in good faith. Been on these scooby sites for years and owned for the last 10 never sold anything before so not in the business of seeing people out of their hard earned money, if I thought there was any chance they were not right I would not have sold them, again I had no problem when fitted to MY11 STI Saloon it was my personal preference to fit new brakes allround. Nick, I will be returning to the UK around start of September you have my number mate.
