Bahrain Grand Prix.
Horrendous crash,amazing that Grosjean survived. Can't believe a formula one car can break in two. Guess they will be looking seriously at barrier construction.

Just as well he remained conscious. I suspect the drivers cell is designed to break away to dump the weight / inertia of the heaviest part of the car. But thats a guess more than a deep understaning.

Think there will be a whole host of questions, why was there a fire, why did the car break there (usually you'd see the engine and gearbox separate from the chassis), how did the car manage to penetrate the barrier (was it just shear fluke that the nose of the car hit it at the only angle that would cause this), will the following medical team now wear full face crash helmets or will they carry a dedicated fire fighter in the car.
The fact that he was in those flames for over 20 seconds and came out with only burns to his hands speaks volumes about the quality of the safety gear, the doctor said Grosjeans visor had hazed over and started to melt so he'd have struggled to see what he was doing or where he was going as he got out of the car. He's a very lucky guy. |

Pretty sickening shunt to watch wasn't it. If that had happened 3 years ago, he'd be gone. The halo did an amazing job of pushing the armco up and over his head, otherwise there's every chance that would have been fatal.
Like Shane says, lots of learn from. They were incredibly lucky that Grosjean remained conscious (despite a 53G impact) and could get himself out of the car, as neither the firefighting equipment in the medical car or the trackside marshals would have been able to put the fire out and allow rescuers to retrieve the driver manually in time. Incredibly lucky chap. |

Shocking to watch. I watched in disbelief as he jumped clear of it after sitting for what seemed to be an eternity. Made stroll’s roll look tame.

Yeah, as said already a number of "lucky" factors there that could have made the outcome very different.
Horrendous looking crash though and absolute vindication that implementing the halo was the right decision.
