Default British Rallycross Championship R2 – Lydden Hill

After much waiting, race season is finally upon us again. Made a trip to Lydden Hill for the second round of the British Rallycross Championship.

Pictures were taken, here are my faves…

Defending Supercar Champion Julian Godfrey had a great start to the meet with fastest time on Sunday, but he failed to make it to the grid on time for the first semi-final and therefore was unable to qualify for the final.

As well as being a round of the British Championship, the meet also constituted part of the Belgian Championship, so there was a huge entry of Belgian Super National drivers in attendance. Got to love the variety in the class!

Johnny Verkuringen was the highest placed of the Belgian Supercar drivers. He almost took an overall podium finish, but lost out on third on the last corner of the final.

Kevin Procter won the first round of the Championship at Croft and qualified on the front row of the final. Unfortunately contact on the opening lap of the race damaged his intercooler and he had to limp round the circuit for the rest of the race.

With Pat Doran unable to race, son Liam took the wheel of the C4 this weekend. He was absolutely spectacular to watch, but the car didn’t seem to agree with his driving style and it broke driveshaft in two of the three heats. Shame, as I would have liked to have seen the car in the final!

Chrissy Palmer made it two-from-two with another (sideways) victory in the RX150’s.

Steve Volders and his very cool looking Mk.1 Escort won the Belgian Super National+ class.

James Harrold missed the opening round of the Championship but was back in his re-built Beetle at Lydden. He was fast, but was slowed on the Monday and Ray Morgan took to the Super Retro class win.

Ollie O’Donovan led for most of the final, but was harassed by Supercar rookie Dan Rooke. When Ollie’s turbo let go on the fourth lap of the race, Dan passed him went on to take the win. Pretty good for his second race in a Supercar!

The next rallycross event at Lydden is the World Championship which is going to be one of the best UK race weekends this year (in my unbiased opinion). Roll on May!

Given all the worry about the weather, it was actually surprisingly pleasant. It was a bit windy, but there were flashes of sunshine on Sunday and a whole day of it on Monday!

It's such a good looking car: it always looks too immaculate to be used for rallycross!
