Engine tune up
Hi guys, i am planning to start spending money on the engine finally, didn't have the time or money to before, my mate had advised me to change the conrods as a priority, what else would i need to do to the internals because i want to get that done first, but i dont really want to go over £2000... what is the most power i can get out of the standard piston's and rings?

He said to me that if i up the bhp above 300 it will bend the conrods. Im haven't got a clue myself...

Well I'm running 335BHP on a UK and CJ ran 400 on his UK 2002 WRX.
Subaru Rods are pretty good. I don't know of anyone running over 300, but less then 400 that have uprated the rods for this reason. Some run over 400 on stock rods. Last edited by Scott.T; 10-11-2009 at 10:25 PM. |

early pre96 blocks from the RA can be closed deck which is stronger.
but it is not that cut'n'dry as some are and some are not. Classic STi may have forged pistons but again it's not cut'n'dry and can only really tell when taken apart. If you target is less then 350BHP then just go for it and bolt bits on to the engine you have. You could spend £2000 on getting a very simple rebuild, and would end up with very little, if any power gain. £2000 on tuning kit will get you : Turbo (TD05-18G/VF28/VF30 etc....): £200-250 2nd hand Injector (550) : £200 ECU : £350-£xxxx depending on choice i.e Apexi (£350 2nd hand, plus £200 mapping), Simtek new & Mapped £1000 Fuel Pump : £70 Fuel Pressure Reg (Good Quality) : £200 Good TMIC or FMIC : £400 Full Decat : £300-£500 Induction Kit : £80 - £150 none of the above should cause engine damage if done right. engine damage still happens on stock engines if not driven with a bit of mechanical sympathy. |

Cheers matey, only wanted to be 100% sure as i didnt want to have to purchase a new engine or have it rebuilt from my stupidness.... Going to start lining up the parts now and get ready to fit them, i love taking the old boy apart...
Thanks again.

run a uk 2000 engine at 385bhp.. no issue.. not something I would recommend on every engine but if the rods were an issue it would have happened then.. although the main killer of rods is torque at lower RPM and probably get most rpm/torque with a 300ish bhp size turbo..
Not seen or heard (yes they would different in detcans) an sti3~6 engine without forged pistons... Simon |
