Jusy wondering how much more acceleration is noticeable with the shorter gearswhen going from uk 5 speed to uk sti 6 speed ?

What you gain in gearing you probably lose in the extra changes I'm sure a 5 speed would be better in mine if it could take the torque as I'm through the gears far too quickly at the bottom end.

I think the 6 speed works well on track and pressing on down B roads etc, but you do have to stir it more. for outright acceleration you would be better off with the 5 speed.

It's interesting this as I am following the potential sale of a GB270 wagon on scoobynet at the moment that has had a 14k engine rebuild with enginetuner and is putting out around 462bhp and a whole heap of torque. It's still running the original hawk wrx 5 speed box. There have been a few comments that it needs upgrading but the owner hasn't had any issues. I'm kind of hoping it's still around in a few months!

J2000 didn't have any issues in his P1 running 485ish on his standard 5 speed. There were those bolt things you could get to hold the box together as apparently they force apart causing them to let go?! That's as much as I 'know'!

Hawk gearbox is totally revised compared to earlier 754 and 752 boxes and is generally more reliable
with a 5speed its more down to driving style/use IMO than it is to a specific threshold and have had many instances of std cars being heavily abused destroying gearboxes where high torque cars have no problems - have 1x customer with the "weakest" 752 style currently near 440lbs/ft and has been for 10yrs+ engine spec also comes into it as the higher power cars suit the longer UK 5spd gearing generally

hmm, i may keep my 5 speed a bit longer until it goes bang. my one in my bug wagon running a vf43 starting to feel like it was having enough of it before i stacked it. gear selection was becoming a bit trickier and starting to whine a bit in most gears.

What was the latest on the issue with your car then mate? (after we spoke before Germany - you were trying another clutch?)
