Default iPhone unlock

Hi peeps
I have had to do a recovery restore on eldest sons iPhone 3 , it was jailbroken previously and unlocked to all networks.
Problem now is it wont recognise a Vodafone sim , I don wan to change provider as I have paid for a 12 month contract for him.

I also don't wan to jailbreak it again as its a blooming pain when you wan to update the software .

I did hear that if I take it into Vodafone they will unlock it onto their network now, anyone know if that's right

Thanks
