hawkeye front shocks - help please

Hi All,

One of my front shocks has gone to shocker absorber heaven. My handling is akin to a north sea ferry at high speed, verging on dangerous and I need to get it sorted quick.

OEM front shocks are apparently £383+VAT each!!

My mechanic has only managed to find one motor factor shock. A Sax unit for £125+VAT each. This is a lot more reasonable, but I have no idea what they're like.

Has anyone else here fitted SAX shocks with OEM springs?

I spoke to RCM this afternoon. They do a BC Racing coilover kit for all four corners for £640+VAT. My mechanic said that they will be too stiff considering I'm using my Impreza every day at the moment.

If anyone can offer any suggestions for aftermarket front shocks for a Hawkeye I'd be really grateful. Ps rear shocks were replaced 2 years ago for Boge units (as OEM units were rather pricey at the time).

Put a full set of KYB Ultra SR's on my Blob Sti a couple of months back. Sourced them from CamSkill at a good price and as KYB made the originals on the car they seemed like the obvious replacement.

Also put a new set of Eibach springs on at the same time.

Thank you both very much. Looks like KYB are the way forward. Forgive my ignorance but can you normally fit 'inverted' shocks as a direct replacement for OEM items or will I need to buy an adaptor kit with them?

Speak to Camskill directly they will advise on what you can and can't fit, wrx are different fitting to STI as are pre 2005 cars totally different to 2005-2008 cars, they are good guys there though and will advise.
When i needed to replace mine nearly 4 years back I swapped them for some decent coilovers, I have not looked back cheap coilovers are harsh on the road, but get some half decent ones and you can still have a ride that's compliant even if it does lean on the bloody stiff side

Is your hawk a WRX or STI?

If its a WRX, then KYB catalog shows the same Excel-G or Ultra SR shocks from 2003 blob to 2007 hawk saloons as no widetracks.
1.5, 1.6, 2.0, 2.0 Turbo WRX, 2.5, 2.5 WRX Exc. WRX-STi (1.03 - 12.07)
The only difference seems to be saloon vs wagon - saloon part codes below.

WRX Ultra-SR Front:

If its an STI, the KYB catalog still shows the same parts for 2003 blob STI - 2007 hawk STI so they seem to think that the widetrack doesn't affect it?? They list the Gas-a-just monotube dampers for the STIs rather than the standard Excel-G or Ultra SR shocks though.

Did you have KYB Ultra-SR series 24 monotone shocks or series 32 Macpherson Strut type shocks fitted to your blob? Can either be fitted as OEM replacements?

Go for KYB from cams kill at whatever budget suite's.
But obviously as a pair.
KYB make the OEM shocks.
