So I don't really follow NASCAR, but they run a truck full of jet fuel on the track at the same time as cars are running, albeit under yellow flag conditions? Seems like a bit of a crazy idea

On tracks like Daytona, they normally have at least once crash per race that they refer to as the "big one". Shards of carbon fibre etc go everywhere, so they have a truck with a jet engine on the back to blow the debris and stuff off the banking and onto the in-field section.

A puncture from sharp debris at 190mph in a nascar is gonna be pretty hairy!

Very strange accident tho, just a combination of bad timing with a mechanical failure on JPM's car.

Ah ok, that explains the jet engine and the fuel then. Seems risky but better than them all ploughing into the wall at full tilt when the tyres go bang.
