Default Check Engine light on syvecs

Hi guys,

Had a CEL come on a couple of times on a track day at Brands Hatch last night, each time it went out after about 20-30 secs having eased off slightly, there were no other signs of an issue, the car didn't appear to have pulled any timing and all other parameters looked ok (oil water etc.)

The ECU has both intake temp sensors and Wideband fitted along with running AVCS on a WRX (2002)

I have the Syvecs software on my laptop - is there anyway to access the log files to find out the cause of the CEL

dont use Syves personally but never come across any aftermarket ECU that uses the CEL light as a fault code in the same manner as factory ECU does............
more often its a "shift" llight or "knock" warning

i would strongly sugget you speak to your mapper/installer to determine the issue

C.J.

I've got the software but what do I use to view the log files?

Cheers I'll give it a try - I'm hoping is was only the IC pipe work banging about as my engine mounts are shot!

Not only that but the engine was moving so much that the top rad hose was worn through by the Rad fan!

About 90-100 max temp hit was 100 averaged around 95.

Error log attached

the CEL light is generally set up as a shift light in Syvecs, NOT a knock warning light (the ecu takes cares of this for you assuming the knock control has been set up right).

I find it distracting personally and switch it off but some people like it.

Have you asked your mapper what he set it up as?

Simon set it as Knock warning for me - was set as this for the Germany trip in case of crap fuel!!

Was trying to work out how bad the knock was and roughly when so I could work out what I was doing when I got the Knock - I'm not sure it wasn't just the I/C pipe work banging as it came on just after Paddock Hill bend as I accelerated up the Hill.

No he hasnt spoken to me, knew nothing about it.

Shift light is pointless, knowing the ecu has pulled some timing and is working is nice to know. There is more than one way to skin a cat duncan, just because yu think it is a pointless feature.

Its obviously pulling a little timing on track Nick. Happy to check it.

Simon

I mean the shift light is a pointless feature IMO. Yes det warning is useful but flashing a light doesnt do it for me in that respect either as it gives no scale of the issue and always leads to the need for further investigation. I run a separate knock system KS3 to give that but that is my preference and leave the ecu to do it's thing and pull timing during a session if needed. Obviously reviewing the logs helps identify when/where the issue is occuring and of course speaking to your mapper.

the fact I believe it only did this on track, probably means the gearbox was noiser due to hotter / thinner oil etc or other such noise associated with being on track (gear change / clutch etc).. or it has pulled some timing to keep it safe.. regardless it is nice to know so in this example Nick knows either it has unnecessarily pulled timing or it had picked up det and pulled some timing. No point running with less power due to not realising it has pulled timing etc..

The idea behind it is that Nick should then let me know so we can investigate lol.

Stratages for what you do on your own car and what you do with regards to warnings on a customers car are very different. I doubt Nick took a laptop and pulled datalogs after each track session etc as why would he.. so it is nice imo for the ecu to warn him of the fact it has pulled a little timing so we can then look into why.

Simon

Cheers Simon - glad to have you back from your travels!

I'm pretty confident is was a 'knock' warning but feel it came from the loose I/C pipework banging about with the shot engine mounts as the engine moved so much the rad fans wore through the Top radiator hose! I'll be taking my laptop with me in future though so I can download any logs when a CEL triggers.

I'll be in touch about a check over once the oil leak(s) and engine mounts are sorted and I may have to look for a replacement turbo as well as mine is noisier than ever now!

Lol yes sounds like fault knock warning due to noise in the bay.

Done two further decent runs in the car since and given it some welly on more than one occasion and no lights at all even with Antilag - so I'm as confident as possible it was just something loose in the bay knocking. Time to sort the mounts and have a general tidy up of parts/brackets etc.
