Apparently they got hacked and it stuffed the site up. I know they're working on it but other than that, I'm not sure what the problem is now and whether they can sort it. Hopefully its fixable.

It's still being worked on at the moment. I spoke to Guy about it a couple of days ago, we are hoping to have some more news by the end of the week.

Good luck to however is having to sort out the mess and thanks for the time and effort

Why someone would hack a car forum website (that only accepts payments via paypal anyway, so holds no personal financial information on anybody) is beyond me, what an absolute

I am informed that a rebuild is still underway, but the pieces have been scattered far and wide!

Thanks Jodie much appreciated....one question if someone could post it to Facebook or whatever. What would happen to all our content which was on there or is that all lost now?

Adam Greensmith Site being rebuilt from backups (threads etc)? Or we starting from scratch? Complete new database?

Hold tight. Things are indeed afoot. AP repointed the URLs to show that they still work and to point them somewhere more useful than that Apache holding page!!

I know Guy was optimistically holding out for us to be able to retain some data and content, but after three weeks of grappling with trying to salvage it I am 99% certain that it's a write off. The main point of failure wasn't so much the hack, but that the daily backups that are taken at host level had been failing for months despite them having a "backup successful" timestamp. Alas, we didn't spot this BEFORE we needed to rely on a backup and nobody at the host end can tell my WHY they're failing (it's not a storage space thing as I doubled that capacity lately).

I have had the tech teams at our old hosts, new hosts, AND a PHP expert buddy of mine all look at our data and they largely groaned and told me to prepare for the worst.

I've spent about 45 hours trying to sort this issue out since it went bang, and so I had mentally already reached the point of accepting a 'worst case scenario' where all content was lost. This was healthy as it allowed me to focus and consult with Guy & AP about how to move forward rather than burn through all my spare time trying to retrieve the past.

We have a new platform via vBulletin. I am not sharing the long, garbled URL because a) right now it's empty and needs a bunch of work done to prep it for going live, and b) at a suitable moment, AP will flick a switch and re-direct the Surrey Scoobies web address/DNS over to it.

I don't wanna put a timeframe on anything. This is the first time I've come up for air really, so I've been leaving Guy to keep people updated. We will TRY to be up and running before the end of August, that's all I can say without tying my own noose, and knowing how much faffing about is still to be done!!

That sucks! All though out of the extensive member list, how many were still active.

A fair on here are/were members on both. Are the monthly meeting still happening? Might be an idea to post it here for the time being.

And for those that haven't been, its a lovely pub, with a massive parking are for clubs. Well worth a visit.

Thanks for your efforts Sean; sounds like a right pain in the arse!

It will be a real shame if the back ups can't be accessed as there was a ton of useful stuff on there... plus all the stuff I posted!

Best of luck with it.

Member list- Yes it is/was full of defunct accounts. From that aspect alone a spring clean is healthy.

Monthly meet - of course! The one that just happened (Sun Aug 8th) was small but interesting because there were only two regular faces (myself and Don) and then four less familiar faces. There was a guy with his family in a green glassic who had bumped into Bod666 who had sent him over. There was a chap called Steve with a very nice Terzo. Then there were two members of the old guard returning, Pirate1066 in his stunning new Foz, and a chap called Richard with a red classic who said "used to come down 10 years ago, remembered it was the second weekend of the month, so thought I' stop by".

Nobody even mentioned the broken website until I brought it up! Here's some pics....

Thanks for the update Sean. I was in a similar situation a few years ago when SES had a 'technical wobble' and I can sympathise with the amount of hours these problems consume! We were fortunate enough to have a couple of backups which contained everything - the problem was that neither was complete and the databases needed merging

Can you PM me an email address - as the SurreyScoobies DNS is hitting SES, I've had an email from one of your members via the 'Contact Admin' link on here. It makes sense that you reply rather than me

Yes, as far as we can feasibly tell. I wouldn't say that any site on the web is ever 100% secure if someone very clever decides to target it, but we're not going anywhere. We have backups stored both at our hosts and on my PC as a second copy should we ever need them.

UPDATE:

We could have gone live this week with a new, empty messageboard. However at the 11th hour my vBulletin technician made some noises to suggest that he was still looking to try and salvage content from the old forum even if him and his developers had to do it manually. They are picking through it now. I'll still believe it when I see it but it is worth holding out a few extra days for.

I will give another update at the weekend.

The good news: Looks like we've salvaged ALL content.
The other news: It hasn't stopped me having a ruthless pruning spree of ancient content and inactive users
The bad news: It still isn't ready to go live. The permissions and forum visibility options aren't right. Altered every setting I think should sort it and can't, so it's back with vBulletin to look at as it must be the inherited permissions clashing with the permissions on the current forum template.

Will update again in a few more days. Meanwhle Project Binky episode 10 is up, check it out, it's brilliant:
