STI Suspension Recommendations
Hi all.
I have recently purchased a 2006 STI Type UK and I have noticed that the rear shocks sound like they are on their way out. I have had the top mounts replaced under warranty by the garage that I bought them from but it still continues to make the same noise. I have done some reading around on the forum and I have seen people talking about just getting standard shocks and springs or going for coilover. Subaru have quoted me £1200 for the shocks and £200 to fit them which seems a lot of money to me. I was wondering what you guys would suggest say coilover wise as seeing as I’m going to have to change the back 2 shocks, for the same price I can upgrade the whole set up to Coilover rite which will intern make the car handle better rite? If anyone can help I would appreciate it. Many Thanks Steve |

If you don't want full coilovers (i would, but depends on how you use the car) the cheaper option is to replace both rear shocks with KYB Ultra SR's - take a look on Camskill's website for their catalogue to find the right parts. Expect to pay £90 per corner, plus no more than a couple of hours labour at a (non-dealer ) garage. I replaced all four of mine for £360 parts, and about £100 labour i think. |

Worth checking, but mine just needed tightening, they came loose somehow. That was 15,000 miles ago and they have been fine sine. When I do go the coilover route, I will be going tein. Speak to brent at SMD, he is a tein dealer.

Thanks for all the input guys, I will do some research. Do coilovers affect your insurance premium much?

Depends on insurance company, some hate mods and some are a little more mod friendly

Check with Gary what policy you are on, but most of us that are with him and that he knows like mods are on an almost limitless policy.

Love my Cuscos with the e-con (in car controller) They do come up occasionally on eBay. Tein are also good.
As for the insurance - speak to Gary as already mentioned. |

Could also check the rear ARB bushes and drop links. |

Whilst on the subject of suspension, I'd thoroughly recommend having an uprated rear anti roll bar fitted, really does transform the handling.
