2.5 engine info please
As above allways heard that the 2.5 engine in the likes of the rb320s that comes standard,arnt much good.. is this the case ? Or is just after modification.??or is it untrue alltogether?? Thanks.

There are issues with the Map but that was on the hatches. I believe the std pistons, rings and rods are not that hot and can only take around 400 before you run the serious risk of failure.
The main weakness is that the block is quite 'open' even on the SCDB and the liners are quite thin, under high boost they can flex or balloon causing the HG to go or the rings to fail. I'm running a fully forged 2.5 but only at 1.5 bar due to that very reason, you can get the blocks pinned to be good up to around 500 or a closed deck insert which sees you over the 600 mark.

For me the 2litre STi engine is better.... If your thinking of changing don't lol

The 2.0 is certainly stronger and a better engine for big power/high revs, the 2.5's are lazy and torquey, great for a fast road car.

I always fancied putting a 2.5 into my classic, but after having the STi Hawk I would probably go down the 2.1 stroker route.

If I did it again for a pure toy I'd go 2.1 CDB or 2.35 if I could find one! For a true fast road cruiser I'd go 2.5 but on a TMIC and only look for around 400, zero lag max torque max drive ability.

I've had 2.0 2.1 2.35 and 2.5 scoobs and my least favourite was the 2.5

2.5's don't have to be lazy, mine seems to like to rev, has very little lag and makes for a pretty quick car. Only thing I'm not happy with is having to limit boost, other than that I like the way the 2.5 drives, each to there own, prefer the 2.5 to 2.0, everyone is different

If I went 2.1 on my bug wrx would be a be worth doing deck inserts on my block instead of going for a different block and what is the cost.

Hi there
If you are thinking to change 2.1L is good idea and still is making nice number like on torque plus if its build correctly can/will be awesome engine We are run OBD(Open Deck Block) 2.1L at 490bhp without the problem and few guys running OBD 2.1L at nice 520 or 550bhp without the problems Jura

I've had 2.1engine tuner running 400 And a 2.5 hawk running 350. And as a road car much prefer the 2.5. As above very much personal preference but there is a considerable difference in the way they deliver the power.
2.5 will get you about quickly without making as much fuss or drama and you won't be left behind by allot of tdi,s on short lazy high gear squirts. |

Are people that lazy they can't just change down gears...
My 2.5 had 457bhp 507lbs/ft, but just always felt boring to drive, I like a big kick up the backside when coming on boost

Taking things to the extreme its a bit like comparing
Say a honda civic type r and a VW 1.9 170bhp pd TDI. To get any kind of real pace our of the civic type R you have to drive it like you stole it, dropping a couple of gears, ragging the **** of it, making loads of noise, and looking rather like a tit and boy racer in the process. Where as the audi TDI will be up the civics chuff, and pulling away from the civic out of corners without drawing too much attention to yourself or looking like a boy racer who only knows 2 positions on the throttle. On the road I would prefer torque, and on track I would prefer the power band all at the top end. Horses for courses and perhaps I'm just getting older/more boring/sensible. |

It's a waste of money swapping the 2.0 for a 2.5 stock engine IMO

Yeah if its a like for like then no point really as its not a cheap swap, if putting a 2.5 in then daft not swapping out pistons and putting in 11mm head studs to save doing it when more power is wanted. I doubt I'd have gone 2.5 if it wasn't already in the car when I got it

Good and fair point James. 2.0 STI if you already have it is a cracking lump as standard or for modding within sensible limits. If you want more power stick with the 2.0STI and just concentrate on breathing and a good spool turbo for the power range you are looking at.

Yes but your turbo made 507/480 on a 2.1 and 511/457 on a 2.0
Your 2.5 is holding it back

as james said... whos "munch" by the way..was looking at getting a newer scoob with the 2.5 as a standard engine proberbly wouldnt end up modding it.. well who knows.. so some valuable info coming up anyway..thanks
