That's a shame, lucky you weren't already on holiday when it happened!

Hope you get some thing sorted.

Worth contacting your bank. Whilst it's not always the case, some debit card purchases are covered, for example Visa debit, in a not dissimilar way to credit cards.

You may not be covered, but all may not be lost.

Good luck.

Here's a Which page on what I was referring to. You'll see one of the examples is an airline going bust (presumably this became very relevant when XL went squit).

It's not a silver bullet, but hopefully may help.

After hours on the phone turns out flights have been paid for but not hotel or transfers so not all bad.
Waiting times on the phone for travel agents and banks are a nightmare.Callbacks haven't happened and phone queues of up to an hour .

I work with the guy who was responsible for signing off the audit of XL airlines.

He was pretty ****ing stressed having his files cold reviewed by the regulators; came through it though, which shows how precarious these businesses can be and how quickly they can fail.

Have you had any luck?

I saw the compensation under the protection scheme in Spain looks to be insultingly paltry.

I guess that's how the prices were so keen compared to some competitors who are ATOL registered.

Hope you get something sorted. Such a crap thing to happen.

No luck as yet. If there is any compensation from the company,s bond it seems it will be around the massive sum of £7.78 .
Still awaiting a call from my bank re chargeback on the debit card

That was the sort of figure I saw being bandied around. Hugely inadequate.

Whilst it's private business and you can't regulate everything, it does seem wrong not to have better contingency requirements.

Update.
After much form filling to administrators ,Spanish banks ( which had to be done in Spanish) and my bank HSBC I finally got most of the money back. HSBC eventually paid it back to me under the chargeback scheme once I'd proved I'd tried to claim from all other parties.
So guys even if you pay for something like I did on a debit card it is possible to reclaim it albeit a right pain in the posterior

Nice to hear a positive result from an otherwise disappointing story. Credit to you for sticking through it and getting your money back, I'm sure it took a lot of time, effort and Spanish! Bien hecho (which Google tells me is 'well done' in Spanish...)

Suppose to be flying to Crete tonight, received an email late last night saying our flight had been cancelled due to an air traffic strike in Greece over the weekend and possibly running into next week. No other flights available without taking 1/2 of the time we were going to be there.

So holiday is up the swanee, to say we are gutted is an understatement

Sorry to hear this, seems to be a lot of this at the moment. My brother is in Spain on a Monarch holiday, but he's not sure if they will be operating when he's due to return in 10 days. Hope you get all your money back.
