Wayne`s World.
Hi,
As some of you know our wagon `Wayne` (apologies but Liz names all the cars) has had overheating issues. A recent trip to Carnetix to investigate has today confirmed the worse and maybe more? Glenn rang to talk me through whats been found,HG definately + rust and for permission to continue stripping as there are traces of copper filings in the oil He has his suspicions but wants to confirm first. Some pictures, I`ll update as and when |

Not good Steve
Where did he find Rust? It didn't seem to have any rust, not visually anyway. I remember Brent saying how clean it was underneath. What do the copper filings point too? As the others have said, its a great wagon, just such a shame its had this happen.

Rust appears to be in the water jacket, not on the car itself so not something you'd have known about Steve.

Glenn had grief with some of the bolts, he sent that picture to illustrate what he was saying. Although not confirmed he says there might be crank/bearing issues hence further stripping Just one of those things that Subaru ownership can throw at you I guess. Thanks for the comments, really appreciate them, would love to upgrade but as I was reminded yesterday that was never the intention and was supposed to be used as a daily commute Had been hoping to sort some of the minor cosmetic issues with the car but will just have to wait a bit longer Cheers Steve |

If you rebuild it at least forge it Steve just for safety

Agreed. Forged and a decent map to around 300 and that will be one sorted Wagon.

That's a real shame to see.
Hopefully you're back up and running soon without too much wallet intrusion. They do say "don't replace, upgrade", but cost and use has to determine whether that makes sense or not. Best of luck getting it sorted. |

It has forged pistons already..

That's what I thought too.....
STi 8 short engine from a good breakers would be a cheaper solution. |

Update.....
After a long conversation with Becky and Glenn at Carnetix today and ultimately with Liz going ahead with rebuild of sorts. We talked options and power upgrades but as I was reminded again why I bought the car I wont be chasing figures but I do want to get to as near factory spec or a bit more which after researching is supposed to be around 280? Heads and block being skimmed this week ready for head gaskets. New bearings ordered. Rods, crank and pistons are all ok and pistons confirmed `forged`(thanks Dave and Scott). Clutch and cambelt all good. Manifold being shot blasted and repainted. New MOT as due. Glenn said "It`s a nice wagon, getting rarer being an sti so worth doing in his opinion" and we agree Just need to find the funds, kidney anyone? |

Update,
Engine running and road tested by Glenn (engine builder) no issues. Just need MOT done prior to collection but before I do I would value your opinions please on the following as I want it sorted whilst the car is still with them. The front nearside shock is leaking (previously advised by SMD after the Wagon`s last service before I bought it) and confirmed again by Carnetix. The questions are what to do on the scale of cost versus the benefits?
Am I right to assume that any replacement on the 3 options that the geometry should be done as well? Bearing in mind I don`t have the final cost for the build but let`s just say its enough and the car is a keeper at this moment in time I would appreciate any advice Cheers, Steve |

I would replace all 4 corners just incase one of the back ones decides its had enough and a bloke on snet is selling a set of BC coilovers for £450 on thread Lots of 500+ parts .

Wayne`s World.
Don't put coil-overs on it unless you want to track it, the "holy grail" of road going classics is a good shock and spring setup, new kyb's and eibach springs worked wonders on my wagon with some new drop links, it made it a real A and B road weapon through South Wales
Although the spring and shock guru on here is silver surfer of course,,, There is something wrong with him when it comes to springs! Also not worth spending out on "cheap" coil-overs.. Glad she is back up and running again ))

I might be able to get a set of Bilsteins that are in need of a rebuild.
They can be rebuilt for £80 per corner. I may even be able to sand blast them before the rebuild ready for paint. |

Can't go too far wrong with these for the money :
http://www.camskill.co.uk/m10b0s2611...TO_2000_Import I am also partly involved with getting sets of lowered (10mm lower the P1) springs matched for these shocks, fresh from Eibach. |

Just spoke to the guy and I think we are talking about £100 for the essentially scrap Bilsteins. I need to find out a little more about the extent to which Bilstein can rebuild them to make sure they are 'refurbishable'.

Update,
Small leak on rad discovered so having this replaced. Today received costs for changing shocks, springs + alignment so now need to decide what to do next? I can either bring the car home as is and wait and save up or just have the fronts done but leave the springs or change the fronts with new springs, have all 4 done and leave the springs, have all 4 done with new springs, fit std kyb`s or go ultra`s with Eibach springs or coilovers are still an option. I have had guidence from our resident respected spring guru and equally value the other comments + just read RCM`s write-up on the BC`s they sell. I need to lie down ) Think I`m going to sleep on it. Dave were your kyb`s std? |

If I remember rightly the springs are H&R which are good springs and the car sits at just the right height in my opinion.. Maybe just change the shocks if the springs are still in good condition? Drive it a while and see how it feels and if you feel the need later to change the springs do it then.
At the end of the day mate the speed you and me drive around the ring we could probably get away with no springs at all

Yep,daily drive has been Liz`s Disco. It just does not have the same feel in the corners as the wagon ,even at my speeds before anyone remarks.
