Best tyres for standard Sti 17" wheels - poll
Your valued opinions wanted!
I'm going to get some new tyres, which for my usage will be: about 7000 miles per year mostly A and B road in the south of England some longer motorway journeys 2~3 times a year occasional track time 2~3 times a year need to carry the family on the longer trips (and some short ones) I don't really want to spend more than ~£400 including fitting. Wheels are standard 5x100 PCD STi wheels, on an '05 non-widetrack wagon. 225/45/R17 is the size I am looking at, and the poll is from the search results on blackcircles.com for under £100 per corner (fitted). Your votes/comments please!

Goodyear Eagle F1 AS3 out of that list for me.
Or.... Vredestein Sessanta. Great tyre on the road and served me well on track too. |

I currently have Vredesteins on mine and have been my choice for a few years now, good tyre for the price and handle most conditions well, mine have done a few laps of the ring too.
I know Steve has pictures of his car on a very moist track day with Vredesteins on, I believe they did ok there too. I will be going to the Eagle F1 AS3's next, have heard great things about them and understand they are meant to be pretty capable on the odd track day too. |

So technically 100% of the voters ticked the Goodyear AS3 box.... but yes it looks weird! |

Eagle AS3 are not rated as good as AS2, If I had to buy another set of road rubber right now and couldn't get Asymmetric 2's and didn't have dedicated track rubber, wanted best of both worlds then I would be looking at splashing that little bit extra on Michelin pilot super sports at 215 or PS4s as CJ said above.,
Who is actually running on asym3's (not 2's)? Though you could easily make Cup2's last 7k at your size for £119 a corner its an incredible bargain and would offer massive grip gains over the tyres you've listed. Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 225/45 ZR17 94Y XL :Link here: .

Now you mention it, I have Asym 2 on the FSTi and Impreza.
Wasn't sure there was a particular difference, hence my vote! |

I have AS3s...
...but they're on the Passat so doesn't count. |

Vredestein Sessanta gets my vote. I've had a couple of sets of them now and always performed well on the road: and in all conditions.

Thanks everyone. Think I will probably go with the Eagles, as the 3 version has been in the top one or two of some magazine tyre tests this year, and seems to be a decent price/performance ratio. The Eagle AS2 version is pretty much universally recommended on Scoob forums etc, and I doubt that the newer version is worse.
Have struggled to find Vredesteins under £100 fitted but if anyone has a link, could go for them too. Having said that, this looks a bit scary: http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article...-Tyre-Test.htm Michelin Pilot Sport 4s are under my price limit, but Cups are not. Will chat to the tyre shop and see what they think too. Cheers!

Another vote for Eagles. I found they offered the best of both worlds and whilst not offering the ultimate (dry) grip of the Potenza's, the car was a far more pleasant place to be in with on theeagles. Softer and no tramlining. I must be getting old!.

They are a bargain at £48. £65 a corner for the same tyre in a 215/40/17, that will teach me to have odd size tyres on the Scoob.

Goodyear have cheapened the production process with the Eagle Asym3, and I've read a couple of folks moving from 2's to 3s to be disappointed, but I'm sure they are still a good tyre.

Thanks again everyone. I've ordered some Eagle Asymm 3s, being fitted next week (£78/corner), will let you know how they feel - can't be worse than what's fitted at the moment!

Hi folks,
Got the Goodyears fitted yesterday, and it feels like I've got my car back! The cheapo tyres that came with my STi wheels were truly awful, especially in damp conditions, and I had little confidence in cornering. Only one drive home from work on the new Eagle AS3s and it was damp (not raining), but had fantastic grip and cornering ability. Looking forward to some fun roads in Cornwall over Xmas too, as long as I can park the wife somewhere so she doesn't get too scared!

Held out for a few more days and Camskill's pricing on the Rainsport 3's dropped down to £48 again so 4 of those are now sitting in the porch for the wife. I won't go into the obvious jokes about buying her rubber for christmas |
