I've got a Halfords Calcium in mine, the last one lasted just under 4 years but it died due to discharging totally while the engine was rebuilt and at least three other total discharges due to little fingers playing with the interior lights.
I got the new one free on their 4 year warranty with no problems at all. I agree they are not the cheapest, and we have a blue star in the forester which again has been fine.

The main thing for mine is that as I don't use the car that often I leave mine plugged into a battery conditioner when not in use.

Bosch from euro car parts, they do various with 3, 4 or 5 year guarantee, normally quite a bit cheaper than halfords

Just done this

4 Year silver guarantee on a Bosch battery, £66 and I popped down in my lunch break to collect it from their Crawley office. Keeping the receipts so if it fails i can just take it back, much easier than trying to return via post if bought online.

So at least i know the car will start for Goodwood

Ought to change mine, my daughter keeps moaning about someones alarm going off in the middle of the night and keeping her awake, lo and behold, the next time I go to move the Scoob it's dead, I've learnt to reverse it into the garage now to make it easier to jump start, especially as the brakes tend to seize on making it a pig to move.

Varta make a lot of standard sized batteries too, so i guess your mate had one of the lightweight ones. Problem with them is they don't hold their charge as long as a normal battery i believe - my problem is that i can leave the scoob a week or two without starting it. A normal battery just about copes, I doubt a lightweight battery would unless it was on a trickle charger all the time.

Default Battery update

Thanks for all the suggestions...finally decided on an Excide Platinum battery from euro parts in Maidstone. Got it for a good price and works first-time every time since being put on the car at the weekend.

If you're a automotive engineer or a aeronautical engineer licensed by the Civil Aviation Authority, get yourself down to Halfords and get a trade card, worth it when buying batteries, quite a large discount.

Would need to be, the Bosch ones in store were over a hundred quid for the scoob when I looked last week, yet £66 in Euro Car Parts

I bought an Exide replacement from Surrey Subaru Specialists a couple of weeks back. Much better than the previous replacement battery and had in there!
