Default whining noise

On my 2003 Impreza, a strange whirring noise has appeared, does it on start up, sometimes goes away but as l do a lot of start stopping (community nurse) its difficult to tell. It sounds more like a sewing machine.

I spoke to Dave at Gatwick who was a bit baffled but mentioned something like an air leak

Any ideas Pleaseeeeee
