What car to get next or just not bother ?
Currently love my classic its quick enough, I don't run scared of it, not really bored of it, makes sense in the current economic climate to keep it, and have winter looming so the 4wd, salt etc makes sense as well.
But I just fancy a change, I'm stressed out my head and need something to remind me why I do what I do. Money is gaining no interest in the bank so figure I might as well get something to put a bigger smile on my face and make me feel alive.... What do I get.? Budget Ideally around 10K and would really like to keep around this, but could be stretched to 25K for something that would blow my socks off, but really don't think I can justify much more than 10K tied up as a toy for me. Critiera is there is none but ideally not another scoob, we have a family car so this is purely to make me feel alive and have fun in. Although that said I suppose a 4 seater might be nice just in case the family motor ever broke down, but its not enough of an issue to even factor really. My current short list is an S1 Turbo charged elise with 220bhp or a 1999 Audi S4 with 460/500. I Can't think of much else that could top either of these. My only concern however on both of these are they are fairly specialist the Audi does not have CATS so would both me knowing I might have problems come MOT time, and the Elise is running a fairly comprehensive engine conversion. That said the base engine on the Elise is nothing special. This would be a daily driver, but for the miles I do I'm happy with something as hardcore as an elise, and as a total toy I'm leaning towards the elise. And before all the wise cracks I appreciate I have pretty much tried everything, but I'm tired of chop changing and really am looking for something to keep, and have fun with. Both to drive and perhaps tinker with. The conclusion and answer might be as I fear just keep what i have, and just get more use out of it i.e track days etc. But I'm looking to explore what other options might be out there. Any thoughts suggestions welcome. Cheers |

Exige all the way Rob. I know it doesn't give you the seats, but as you say, you already have a family car.
OR! How about picking up a VX220 and tricking it out? Though, I do admit, when you say Lancia Delta Integrale.......... that gives me a semi! |

Elise mate....but only cause i haven't driven one. If you get one I know i'll get the chance. Your vx220 for me was the most fun car you had. So the elise would be a hoot. A good track tool too.

Have done the TVR thing and did like it allot, but I couldn't get past the bad build quality, reliability and kit car thing, but the sound and feel good factor was great and in truth if I could buy back the one I sold for the same price i would have it tomorrow. But its one of those cars where all the good ones are held onto....
Done a VX220 turbo stage 2 and liked it, apart from being a pig to get in and out, but when ever an elise past me, I wished I had the elise over the VX despite the VX having lots more power. The S1 Elise is such a pretty looking car with great lines and have always had a love for them even in standard form. Intergrali, and E30 M3 all great but couldnt be doing with the LHD. I'll be honest as say Its a bit gay, and prententious but these days its as much about feeling good about what ever I'm driving as it is about the driving experience, and don't think the S4 would tick that box, so short list is still the elise. Would love a supercharged exige, but out of budget. I Had thought about another S2000, and seen a nice yellow one with smart alloys, but due to lack of torque didn't feel that quick as all. I Had thought about a Boxter 'S' which get good reviews in terms of its capabilities, and also a 3.0 Z4 or if I could find one at sensible money a Z3M. And even the Z4M is fast becoming a good but and depreciation proof. All nice, but a turbo charged elise still trumps all of these as a proper toy car. |

But as soon as I start considering the E46 M3, I then start looking at 335I's which would be better as it can be a saloon, younger and more main stream. But niether are what I would call toys. Just very nice all round cars. |

As per our previous posts with regards to my M3.
It does tick virtually every box possible, but in all honesty, I agree totally that it is not the "toy" that you think it should be. It is a great car without a shadow of a doubt, but if you are looking for something seriously fun, as you know, this ain't it. Although the SMG box is a joy to drive quickly If you did fancy it though, its going for a very good price. 2005 (05) - M3 E46 SMG 46,000 miles (next service 8000 in miles) Full dealer service history (with 1200 mile crucial stamp) Leather throughout (heated fronts) Harman Kardon Upgraded Stereo Freeview TV / Sat nav Very clean example 1 Minor issue, 1 scuffed alloy £16,750 ono (I am putting it up for £17,500 next week on auto trader) |

And as nice as the Evo is, the scoob wins every time for me when it comes to value for money. Hawkeye great suggestion and really like them, but it wouldn't push my buttons enough to justify the extra its going to cost me over what I already have. |

Nice cars, but good ones are expensive now for a 2001 car with best part of 100K miles.
but the idea of a RS4 takes me back to my initial short list of considerations which was S4 running RS4 mods pushing out 460bhp/500ft/lb. The S4 in question could be had for my car and approx 4K. Which is very good value when you consider it from a pounds per BHP perspective - It would be quick, but would it be as much FUN as say the elise, or any of the many 2 seater toys out there. If its to be a 2 seater toy i've pretty much decided budget needs to be around 10K, if its something the family can get in and appreciate at times then don't mind upping the budget. |

Good point. Thing is & i dont quite understand why. If you put the right parts to an Evo they go up in value add RS or MR range to that & you cant really lose. If it was me buying it would have to give some serious thought to a E46 M3 supercharged. Like you say it ticks allot of box's in std form with 480bhp it's a box i wouldn't mind being in. As you say the money side of things can be increased, family & fun car all rolled into one. You got me thinking now! Anyone fancy an Evo 1 elderly owner fsh only light use on the Sunday church run. |

I would love another lancia, cant beleive the price of the Evo's now.
The handling was stunning, not particularly quick as standard but great fun. Out of everything mentioned so far,i personally would go for the Audi, but thats because im getting old and fragile after my last crash. I still want an RS4,20 to 22k buys a stunning one. Wouldnt it be nice to have enough dosh to have a selection |

Got up this morning with a view to doing a deal on the S4, phoned him at its sold
This was it, deal was my car and 4k - Would have been good but not meant to be. http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1791826.htm. Ended up buying a writing desk and building it for my daughter instead.... All deflated now, so might go back to just keeping the Scoob over winter then think again later on, or even toyed with complete change of direction and just putting the money towards upgrading our current family motor to a really nice family car, and just keep my scoob as a work horse, hack. I think thats my problem, depending on mood, pleasure or business, how well work is doing, family or on my own, all affects what I fancy driving and how I fancy driving.

Rob would get bored quickly of the V8 S4 unless its been well played with.
Lets face it you would always want the RS4 Both are only good for very low double figure MPG when driven I have just got a new job and i get a company car, which is good but i really wanted a budget so i could get an RS4 by adding my own dosh Now got to decide do i take the Audi A5 or the 3 series bmw |

No worries, I'm a lost cause and just going round in circles anyway so I give up at the moment. But will be looking at another S2000 this afteroon thats local. But failing that I'll take some time out and think again later.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...:X:RTQ:GB:1123 Yellow is not everyones cup of tea but with the alloys looks smart IMO - lots of smiles for not allot of dosh and might be able to keep the scoob as well with this. Love the A5, neighbour up the road has and really looks the part, and next door has a series. The 3 series just looks bland and boring by comparision. Both nice cars though, but my choice would be the audi. Now look what you've done and gone. you me thinking about fast executive saloons again for me v's a toy..... Aaaaaarrrrgggggg. Help me!! I need therapy. Last edited by RobEvo5; 03-10-2010 at 12:51 PM. |

The sound of the V8s are awesome, dont worry about the colour as you never keep one long enough for anyone to see you. As for the petrol just make sure it comes with a full tank when the petrol runs out the car will go anyway.

These Classics of ours can be awfully good fun with some money spent on them over time!
Could try a P1? Like we all day in the P1woc, you don't realise how different a P1 is until you have driven one! and the potential is crazy. Just an optional thought |
