differnce between newage wrx and sti power?
As above i understand the sti is alot more generous with its power gains over the wrx, what has the sti got that the wrx dont? i know the injectors turbo are differnt blocks must be the same minus the imports being forge(classic anyway) does the heads have bigger ports? Bigger bore tb high flow manifold?? there seems to be alot of power differnce between the impreza range from 215 upto 400bhp just trying to get a better understanding of it and possibly save a few quid on the tuning side of things??

Active Valve Control System (I think) but basically variable valve timing to improve low down torque and spool.

It will improve spool and come with more aggressive STI cams so yes however it's not that simple, what version WRX do you have? As it will involve as a minimum an ECU swap to run the AVCS and possibly inlet manifold etc.

Its a version 8 03 blobeye other than that i havent a clue? not even sure if its had a remap. bigger turbo ect it has an exhaust & filter and is alot quicker than standard and hell of alot more power than my 330ci msport i just swapped it for!

The blob eye WRXs might have AVCS as std but the STI cams will definately be better.

only JDM WRX had AVCS, Euro spec cars just had std non variable cams..........

Might look into getting a set!! jpp had some the last time i looked, might pop up and have a chat once rad is sorted!! first off im goin to get a ihi vf 35 turbo would like to see a good 350-380 out of it hopefully!

Bear in mind your looking at simtek or Syvecs to get the AVCS running so budget between £1500 and £2000 on top of the price of the heads!
Possibly better to get your heads flowed/ported and get a set of fast road cams?

You won't get 350-380 out pf a vf35.
normal figures for those are 310-340 on a wrx with Sti pink injectors. |

nope ALL new-age STI have the AVCS heads as std (as mentioned above better spec cams than the JDM WRX also)

best rethink that one then! ive been miss led! was told a vf 30 large tmic injectors fuel pump 3" exhaust would get me to the 350+ mark! what turbo would you recomend? something fast spooling? cant be doing with massive lag or 3-3.5k spool up?? cheers

I'm running a VF28 which is basically the same as a VF30/35 and it's pretty much maxed at 335BHP (1.5bar peak, 1.3bar at top end). I may be able to get it to 350, but then I would be mapping beyond safe and efficient limits. I also have all the gear in the car to monitor health at all times, so could spot any issues which (no offence intended) jo public would not have visibility of.
To get between 350-400BHP you need an STi for starters or at least a good forged WRX short engine. Then bolt on a MD321H/T or a genuine 18G or 20G. To get 380BHP from a WRX block is very very optimistic, and will also shorten your gearbox life considerably. You'd be suprised how good 320-340BHP feels in a WRX, as it's still a huge jump from the stock 218BHP (ish) figure. |

my first thoughts were a td05 20g but most people who have them wished they had gone for the 18g! For the last couple of months ive been hearing-reading good things about the ihi vf,due to stingyness and current climate my buget is forcing me to go second hand!! so really must make my mind up and get the right turbo, isnt the vf28 known as the wild one?? i had read somewere could be the 23? think the unit is taken off an ra

Better off just doing a tumbler delete. |

Holy grail would be a set of hatch STi heads with AVCS exhaust cams as well
Not sure if it's all hatch STi or just later heads though - and these would need a Syvecs or AlcaTek for sure. |

Thanks for the replies on this! going to look into this more and look at cost for sti parts for my wrx, if its goin to work out more for parts with labour id be better off buying a sti lump??

the 400 mark sounds very good hopefully a bit more on the torque!!! will be making a start hopefully in march when i come back from mexico! One thing i would love is the ra ratio box!! my v limited had this and with the 310 it was a fun car to drive shame i couldnt bolt one on!! im not after top end i prefur how it gets there! Might get on the lookout for an insurence wright off rear end that way i get the works for engine prices! Also theres a police site that auctions off seized cars so that could be intresting!! also gives some time to save but i think the sti route has to be the best option!! Cheers for all your info on the avcs!! Some intresting stuff there!!!
