Neutral position switch has been replaced, map tweaked and a happy me and happy car. Nice of Rich at FB to do it all for me Saturday morning as the roads were quiet and no time off work was needed so suited me perfectly.
Looking forward to the blast down to Goodwood this coming Saturday. |

Took possession of some fancy parts today, think Christmas has moved to the 13th May. The man who supplied them was certainly as generous as the bearded man in red.
I have also purchased a resonated centre section from Miltek after being a bit too noisy on drive by at a recent track day. I am hoping it might help quieten things down a little however looking at the 'baffled' design I am not too sure it's going to make much difference... I guess at least a map tweak probably isn't necessary but I can't see it solving any noise levels. |

Anti-lift kit fitted over the last couple of weekends, not driving the car for work means I can spread things out a bit. I had intended to complete everything last weekend but things got a bit tricky.
I removed the bolts holding the 'C/U' frame in place under the car only to shear two captive nuts, no issue as access to the nuts was easy and once again the angle grinder was my friend. Most of the bolts removed had seen better days, extremely crusty and the shanks on each of them had rotten and worn so much 12mm bolts had 8-10mm diameter shanks. Ryan was ordering some paste from ICP so he grabbed a new set of bolts for me at the same time. Whilst waiting for those I could at least fit the new bushes. The main bolts holding them to the chassis had to be torqued to 250nm, so a new tool was purchased. It felt somewhat displeasing having to put so much effort in to tightening a bolt, especially as me and fastenings on this car don't get on too well, thank heavens for ICP stocking so many genuine Subaru fastenings, must have purchased them all now! Whilst the 'C/U' frame was off the car I gave it a very quick tart up. I had also had a chance to raid my work for suitable nut and bolt replacements for those I had damaged, fortunately finding some nice fine pitch M12 flanged bolts and matching self locking nuts. The new ones had arrived in the week from ICP too and I had to organise their positions and match them to the necessary spacers that came with the anti-lift kit. Lined up the frame under the car to go back in to place And got to bolting it all back together, torquing to the specs advised by Subaru and everything went smoothly I had read quite a bit in to the necessity of the frame under the car as many it would seem leave this off, mainly for the 14kg weight saving. Apparently it's reason for being there is crash rigidity in an accident, as far as I'm concerned it ties everything together under the car nicely and should aid stiffness and support to the front subframe, so it stays! Steering feels heavier as a result of the kit but nothing too drastic, now for an alignment to keep everything in check. Next project has begun too... |

Tell you what the c frame is in really good condition for its age ive seen some that have crumble after being removed are you going to do the painting yourself on the air intake fog light cover .

Cracking stuff, the sump is a bit of a ****er to fit, is that a cork gasket? (its regulatory in group N I believe?) replace with loctite silicon sealant if your leaving it on permanently its worth getting pickup pipe o-rings spare if they didn't supply them with the kit, as sometimes necessary to move it slightly.
As I said before, shout if you want a hand with brakes (it's gona be interesting!)

Spot the parallels...
Had a couple of bits sorted on the car Saturday with Ryan and his mechanic, been a few month's since I 'acquired' the baffled sump and timing belt kit (thanks Ryan ) and finally booked the car in to have them sorted. I was tempted to do both myself, but didn't want to push my abilities beyond my comfort zone especially considering the importance of both these areas of the engine. Nothing beyond the norm to report with regards to timing belt and the sump (glad I wasn't the one wrestling it on to the car) however two issues elsewhere did crop up... On the drive over after having a little blast with a motorbike the check engine light reared it's ugly head, fortunately my hand held reader confirmed a squiffy knock sensor so ordered one whilst the car was being fiddled with. The bigger surprise was the radiator which, upon removal from the mounting brackets showed itself to be a little over weight, bulging out at the sides rather then being the traditional rectangular shape. I had never seen such a thing before but had been reassured it can be a common find if the radiator is getting on a bit and/or takes a battering from the elements (can't think why...). It's working fine, no leaks either but of course I am taking no chances so new one was delivered today from ICP to be fitted ASAP. Car is running nicely and all being well should be back to Lydden Hill middle of September for another track day. |

Rad could possibly be a head gasket issue , stick a tube on the header tank and point up the screen and give it some boost to be sure otherwise the new rad may end up looking the same.
Not saying it is head gasket but worth checking

My BM one was fully convex when I took it out pretty sure they all do this (thin factory plastic capped rads from all the major manufacturers) I suspect the BM one was very old, I'd look at changing the standard scoob ones fairly regularly, I seem to remember my last standard one that was removed was the same.

Managed to change rad today along with top hose and some of the hose clamps. Pic below shows the old special bulge edition radiator.
I also changed the knock sensor which was a little fiddly with some of the pipes in the way but not as bad as removing and re-fitting the flipping top mount. No matter how many times I have done it it is always a pain to put back in to place, is that a good enough excuse to move on from a top mount set up...?! Also changed over fuel pumps. I had a 255 Walbro, perfectly fit for purpose but when I installed it originally I managed to snap off the star lock washer pin that secures the pick up sock to the base of the pump. As Ryan's old 290 pump was available I grabbed it off him for peace of mind, fortunately not making the same mistake twice and resulting in me worrying less about the pick up falling off in the future. |

Had a 'fiddle with the car' day Saturday after I ordered some K-Sport Forge 8 pot callipers and 356mm 2 piece discs with Performance Friction pads from AS Performance last week. This was my first order from AS and the service was great, I look forward to more dealings with Alyn in the future.
Took a few hours fitting the kit, didn't rush the job and spent a good amount of time with the wire brush cleaning up the hub flanges ready for the disc. It's nice to know at least I no longer have to deal with the uncertainty of the mounting bolts in Brembo's callipers saga, caused me quite enough hassle over the last couple of years. Out with the old In with the new Looking forward to putting them to the test at Lydden in a couple of weeks time. |

I have gone for the Z-rated PF pads, I had them in the Brembo's and know what they are like. I think they are a good compromise between track and daily driving, should look after the discs better then an aggressive set of pads too. This was part of the reason for choosing the brakes, I won't be putting it on a diet as I still want to take humans places in relative comfort on the odd occasion, it's my only car remember! |

Long overdue update time...
Long and short of what has happened over the last few months (other then 4 new tyres and a keyed/damaged front wing) I have fitted an oil cooler and re-positioned the power steering cooler to allow for this. It’s been a bit of a nightmare to be honest, fitting a Mishimoto kit apparently designed for a Bug/Blob, only to very quickly discover it isn’t really designed for either in UK spec and certainly not a Blob Eye. Below pic shows the cooler, mounting bracket and lower plate to force the air to flow through the cooler instead of under it. It certainly looks the part and to begin with I thought it might be smooth sailing. The bracket is bolted in to the two holes where you see the white plastic clips currently holding the bonnet release catch cable in place. I imagine most of you have now seen the first problem, how can I put an oil cooler in the space taken up by the power steering cooler...?! I tried to work out any other options for mounting positions in this area, trying to find a way of leaving all the power steering gubbins in place, turns out it just wasn’t possible if I wanted to use the bracket as intended. This pic shows the space available to the right of the power steering cooler, space is taken up by horns without many options for a basic move around I tried moving bits around but if I used the two blank holes available in the upper body work the cooler would end up being almost in the headlight. At this point I set my sights on trying to work with the kit as it was intended, I set myself on fitting where it should be and working out the power steering cooler side of things later down the line. I pulled the cooler pipe out of the way to at least get the oil cooler in to place. The power steering cooler was only a problem because Mishimoto developed the kit on a US Scoob, which didn’t have a cooler pipe located like the UK spec. At this stage I came across my next problem, the oil cooler and mounting bracket fouled on some of the metal work near by, again a problem highlighting the fact it was a kit designed on a bug eye, not a Blob eye. The bolts and metal ‘tang’ sticking out in the second pic were in the way, the metalwork to the right of the bolt in the first pic was in the way. I cut of the ‘tang’ and had to leave everything else in place as it was all necessary. To get over the problem of the fouling areas I got the grinder on the bracket and oil cooler to shape it and allow it to fit. I also had to chop up the metal plate that sat at the bottom of the oil cooler because it wouldn’t fit behind the crash bar. Again a problem that came about because the kit was made using a bug eye as a template. You can see what a tight fit it is, after getting this far I still had to work out cramming the lines too and from the sandwich plate in that ran from the bottom of the cooler. One line runs down through the gap between the air-con condenser and the chassis rail, the other line runs under the headlight, down the gap where the fog light would be on a WRX/WR1 and out trough some plastic panels separating this area from the engine bay, next to the exhaust manifold/subframe. On we go to the next issue (talking of the exhaust manifold!). Mounting the thermostatic sandwich plate, thought this would be simple however it turns out there is only one very specific place it can go. The banjo bolts for attaching the lines are chunky, they don’t sit flush with the sandwich plate either in terms of thickness/height. I had to chop away at the heat shield around the manifold to make the necessary room for the bits to go, the instructions in the kit did say this would need to happen. So one fiasco later (and with power steering cooling still to be sorted) the oil cooler was in place and working! I purchased some DEI heat shielding to put around the oil lines close to the exposed exhaust manifold Power steering cooler story will follow shortly... |
