What's the story here, the breakdown company refused to recover because the costs outweighed the value of the vehicle? Just because of the gearbox issue?

Which breakdown company? One to avoid in the future!

Well at first it was because I was seen on the ring but in the end they said ok it didnt happen on the ring and then said because its not as it come from the manufacturers so in the small print said that it cant be mooded, on page 30 of the small book lol. And that was with the aa European break down.

Eh, so they then refused to allow you to claim on a breakdown policy as the vehicle is modified from standard?
Never have I seen a statement along the lines of 'i confirm my vehicle is standard' when taking out a policy... its breakdown, not insurance!

I've just looked up the AA's European T&C's.
https://www.theaa.com/~/media/the-aa...rent.pdf?la=en

Page 20:

Quote:
12. All vehicles must:
be built to manufacturer’s specifications
• have a current MOT certificate and have a valid current excise licence (tax) (where applicable)
• have appropriate insurance for driving overseas
• be in a roadworthy condition at the start of Your Trip and be used for private purposes only.
In the event of a claim You may be required to provide proof of Your Vehicle’s service history.
WTF, my scoob hasn't had a service stamp for about 5 years as I do my own oil changes (normally once a year which is less than 3k for me lol). These companies boil my piss at times, they'll look for any loophole they can to avoid paying...

Also, the first point about being built to manufacturers specs is sketchy at best. Your car *was* built to manufacturers specs, its just been altered since Or is there something else in the policy terms they are trying to use to escape responsibility?

Also..... i've just noticed they state they collect, store and process personal information from social media. They have your details and it would be easy to find your facebook profile, see the photos on the Ring you may have posted and then thats easy grounds for them to refuse cover....

Tossers!

Agree with Steve, what a cope out. Are these conditions common to all recovery firms? Good luck with the pickup, hope all goes well.

I just phoned the AA and asked them about the European cover they had given my car.

I asked what would happen if the car had broken down near the ring, and she said I wouldn't be covered due to a zone 1 issue.

So I've asked for a full refund and this has been forwarded to the complaints department, due to the AA not giving me all the information about Germany when I had taken out the policy.

I'm not sure how this will pan out as breakdown cover is always a grey area when abroad anyway.

But I was miss informed and the policy booklet is very vague on Europe rules.

Maybe worth people who HAVE broke down at the ring putting who they used and any issues or good experiences so people know who to use .

Exclusions from the RAC European Cover:

-breakdowns resulting from activities that are not subject to the normal rules of the road for example rallies, stock car racing, use of the Nürburgring or other formal or informal race events

-your vehicle if it is not legally taxed, insured and holding a valid MOT which is required by law or is not being used in line with manufacturer's guidelines;

-vehicles that are not in a roadworthy condition. If we consider, acting reasonably, that the vehicle is not in a legal or roadworthy condition, we can refuse to provide service. If you can demonstrate that the vehicle is roadworthy we will provide service

Pretty specific about use of the Nurburgring but obviously only if it breaks while it's on the ring, pretty grey area around use in line with Manufacturers guidelines and what is legal, car can be roadworthy without a catalytic converter but it's not legal

And Allianz are pretty clear, plus they won't cover cars over 15 years old on standard policies and over 10 years old on their gold plus policies

12 Charges for specialist recovery or charges incurred by us where the vehicle is not being used on a public highway or when the breakdown occurred where the vehicle was not accessible using our standard recovery equipment.

Although I'd read that as the ADAC recovery charge from the ring itself, they'd probably still take you home.

15 Vehicles modified in any way from the manufacturers specification

In this case they could effectively state that having a non OEM tow bar, roof box, aftermarket wheels etc invalidates the policy.

If you can't get your ADAC cover for any reason Ian the Saga cover looks pretty good provided you don't need to be recovered after blowing up on track, no age limits on car and just states it must be MOT'd and serviced in line with manufacturers guide lines. Only 2 and a half years and I'll qualify.

A lot of the others I've looked at use Allianz in Europe so you wouldn't be covered, think Green Flag have a 15 year age limit on the car so most of us with pre 2005 cars wouldn't be able to get cover with them.

Yes, that's what I used to use every year, but I can't remember off the top of my head who the underwriter was.

However, I think Gary said when we were last chatting that he couldn't get the cover anymore, or that it was limited to a max age of 15 years.... I can't remember to be exact, it was a while ago

When the first of the newages is nearly 20 years old, age is going to present an issue going forwards....

This is most likely the case yes. I said it ahould of be a question and I would of said it was modified and gone with somelse. Even if it was the mods it qould be serviced stamps ect. If you read it a couple of lines above the mods in the terms. Says basicly even if they hurt or kill due to there negligence that cant be held responsible OMG.

I tried to get ADAC but they changed their rules and you need to have a residential address in Germany for new policies as of 12 months ago apparently..

I’m tempted to take mine on a trailer next time, if the kia breaks down i’ll just leave it and drive the track car home lol.

I’ve found getting breakdown cover harder this year even just in this country. Just changed from RAC to AA as found hardly anyone else covered older cars and also i wanted personal cover not on a specific car.

I've been with RAC for this reason for years, got 3 of us on it with personal cover as I have access to 4 cars.

Following with interest... did you have an annual policy with European breakdown, or just temporary cover whilst over there?

The sticky point is that the AA have the same policy terms as Shane found with the RAC:
Quote:
Any costs incurred where Your Vehicle is used in Rallying, off-road driving or in the Nurburgring or used in motor sports.
So i guess within a few mile exclusion zone of any race track in Europe? I guess the best retrospective option is to slip the Bongard driver 100 euros to take the car up the road to Cochem or somewhere, and say you're on a driving holiday around the Moselle valley... but that's assuming they haven't got you shafted on the social media front!

Nice videos, and at a good speed.
Takes time to be faster, best to be save and learn the track.

I've been going for 4 years now and love it.

Jasons car is coming home next Wednesday.

Thank you everyone on this years trip..

You all made this years another great trip.

Such a shame for Jason and Dean.

It was also a shame that we didn't get chance to say our goodbyes at the Eurotunnel terminal..

Hopefully see you again next year, only 51 weeks to go..
