I renewed the ADAC Plus for myself and Jo in the end as I think it was only about €20 for her, which she can use as a backup over here for our RAC membership.

thanks Chris.

Bump

Just sorted my breakdown cover (started to investigate things yesterday)

Thought i'd bump this thread from last year as I have/had the same problem with the old girl being 18 this year too

Gary@KM, He can't cover the older vehicles so be aware, I asked him first..... he's had the same problem with trying to get cover for his Evo

ADAC, this was my second choice (following reading this thread) they cover the driver (and partner if you choose) so your covered in any vehicle, which is great however, they would not commit to saying if they would repatriate my 18 year old car!! they said they would take for repair numerous times but no firm answer regarding repatriation you also CANNOT apply online as it does not recognise UK postcodes.... so you have to phone

AA, Asked the AA because its who Scotty (started the original thread) used for the last trip and they would cover the vehicle great I thought!! but they will not repatriate its recover and repair only... (newer vehicles should be fine) :edited to add: the AA will bring you home (provide tickets for travel) and will cover the fare for your return to collect your vehicle when its repaired.

Tried all the usual online comparison companies!! none of which would provide even a quote!! Car too old or registration number not recognised!!!

So have gone with single trip cover with (not the cheapest)RAC they WILL cover the old girl and they will cover repatrition (up to market value) of the vehicle......... (thats plenty to get the old girl(18) home if she breaks out in spots) the cover provided is also pretty good having read the documents... :edited: RAC did offer a cheaper alternative to the one I went for but repatriation was limited to £500 so you take your chance...:

I've paid for mine this morning so have cover ready and waiting for this years trip.

Hopefully it helps those of us with the more 'vintage' cars

Ouch. I've used Gary every year for european breakdown, did he say how old the car needs to be before its a problem? The bug is 2002 so i've probably got a couple more years if its a simple 'age of vehicle' restriction (rather than something fixed like pre-2000) but it sounds like I might run into the same issue in a couple of years....

No Steve, just that they are having trouble providing cover for the older cars....

I'm sure Gary will be along soon and clarify any cut off or age requirements... it may even be car specific and done by reg details?

The Supra is 1998 and considered too old by many for cover now, not just KM i'd be surprised if cover wasnt available for yours but if you do fall in to the same problem, then perhaps the info above may help you a little

This surprised me too I thought there would be no problem as you'd had cover previously without problem again, it may be car specific or something?? either way, was told that I would be repatrited but car would be towed to garage for repair

I'm all sorted now anyway, after many calls and form filling......can't wait for the trip now

It appears that the lady at the AA was describing details of the 'single trip cover' and not the full cover If your with the AA, you should be fine if you've got the 'full' cover...... its the single trip that doesn't cover repatriation you obviously need to check that you have european cover.

The recovery from the ring wont be covered by anyone apart from ADAC, even then you may have to pay and then reclaim the money later..... if your with anyone else, you pay (250euro i believe) to be recovered to the carpark, your own european recovery will then take over from the carpark....

also, if you breakdown in France on the motorway, you can only be recovered by using one of the roadside phones or Police........ you need to check your policy to see what to do in this event... the RAC one says that you must get recovered to the recovery company yard and then the RAC will take over from there.

Scott, I've got the comprehensive - single trip cover for the trip yes....... I've got AA cover in the UK as part of my bank account 'perks' but when I enquired about european cover they said no repatriation!! It looks like if they had said repatriation with comprehensive then I would have been happy to go with AA..

Think I need to take a strategic approach to this...

Sort Breakdown Cover in Feb

Sort Insurance in March (when its due on both cars)

Order spending money in April

Panic in May about what ive forgotten!

I have a good strategy, run round like headless chicken between now and June.

My car list of things to do has exceeded all previous years by quite a bit.
