Which engine oil
Hi All
Its that question again. I am doing an engine oil and filter change before trip to the Ring. I have always used Mobil 1, and change the oil every 4 to 6 months which is never over 1000 iles,as car is rarley used. So am looking for a fully synthetic oil for the summer, as will change it in the winter. I know people on here are trying diferent oils now So whats the flavour of the month now and what viscosity should i use for the summer? Thanks |

There is only one choice: Bardahl XTC 10w60 with the Turbo Protect additive.
If you want the full information on the oil I shall gladly send it to you. Ask Jimmy at JS Engineering, who has just fitted a number of sump baffles on cars for the Ring trip, about Bardahl Oil. Cheers, Peter.

Depends if Its pub talk or practical motoring. Millers cfs get good word spread. but what proof Is there that its better in a road car. Opie oils vehicle selector will recommend a range of semi and fully synthetic all depends on the thickness of your wallet.

I'll have to bring the Timken bearing test machine to a meeting so we can all see which oil is best.
If the Millers is better I'll have to go and cook burgers at MacDonalds for a living

How many people recommending oils work in the industry, spend time in the factory and lab, have independent analysis results for the oils they use / sell (for different mileages or hours of use,) have back to back comparisons for different oils on a dyno, and have seen the engine stripped down to examine the wear?

I am aware of the bardahl and the bafled sump jobs Jimmy has done.
I am one for looking at long term testing and recommendation. How long has Bardahl been on the Market, are there any recognised race/ rally teams using this oil? As I've said my oil barely gets time to degrade, the important thing is that it performs when I take it on track or give it some stick . |

Opie Oils suggested the Fuchs titan race 10/50 backed up by my engine builder (he wasn't bothered with brand only grade) as it was on offer and I got 10l for £70!
Used to use the Millers 5w40 before I went forged. Useful reading: Lubricating a modified car Engine oil viscosity explained

Motul & Silkoleen both into there ester's. Engine temps stayed exactly were they should. Dont have a problem with Millers just ive never used it in my car.

The Silkolene is now the Fuchs - same oil just re-branded, and the Millers CFS is a similar formulation as they are all ester based oils.

Three points:
Synthetic oils will lubricate you engine, the formulation and quality of the ingredients varies, but generally they will do an sufficent job. The choice is whether you want the best oil and the extra advantages...the best protection, better fuel consumption, more power etc. along with the technical support that could save you a big bill in the future. Oil test results can indicate potential problems without the expense of opening up the engine. I didn't say to buy the oil from me....I'm only offering the best advice and I would rather people bought my recommendation from another supplier than use an inferior product. I supply several government agencies with Bardahl which is far more financially rewarding than selling single cans of product, but I am passionate about cars and using the best products to get the best performance. That is the only reason why I post on forums and spend every weekend at the race track. I am not an oil seller - I provide oil solutions. If I was selling purely for profit it would be far easier to sell a brand that spends £millions a year on advertising or a range of brands. My remit is to provide people with the best and that makes me proud. The RAF Typhoon Rally Team who run an Impreza changed from Millers to Bardahl this year after I demonstrated the difference in quality at the Autosport show. At the end of the day you pay your money and take your chance.

Thanks for the info. It's always a sensitive subject and many a debate has been had on here. I am not bothered about costs, as it's insignificant compared to the potential costs of engine damage. I think it's great that your passionate, after all that's what it's all about, you will find alot of that on here. I am always willing to try something new, but reassurance that the product is as good as if not better than the other recognised performance oils is what I want. Have you any long term test data, how long has this oil be on the Market, lastly where was it developed and tested Many thanks |

I am one of the people who have had the Cosworth Baffled Sump fitted this weekend by Jimmy @ JS Engineering. This included having the Bardahl XTC 10w60 with the Turbo Protect additive.
Obviously, I can't comment on what it's like yet. I was using Mobil 1 15w50 before this, but mainly because it's thicker formula reduced engine noise. And me being in panic mode after blowing mine up a couple of years back, I went over the top really in looking for that. The noticeable difference is the engine noise, but that was always going to be the case. After spending time talking to Jimmy on Saturday about the Bardahl products, he couldn't speak highly enough of Bardahl. He said that it is significantly better than the Motul products he has used in the past. Most people on here know Jimmy's pedigree in the racing world and in my honest opinion, his word or opinions go a very long way with me. The truth of the matter is, we all have favourites. Millers is tried, tested and more importantly trusted within the Subaru community. It will always be difficult to convince people that a new and to some extent unheard of product is better. And until Bardahls products have been tried by people within the community and gets good reviews, it will probably and rightly not change the minds of brand and quality loyal users. I am hoping that while we are in Germany, I can share the bottle of Bardahls Octane Boost with another Millers user (Hopefully Anger?) to see what he thinks of the product. It will be good as we will both be using Millers on the trip, both of us trying the product at the same time will be very useful, information wise. I always love these ongoing oil debates |

Millers here, closely followed by Motul (and unfortuinately from experience Silkolene/Fuchs further down the list!!)
Millers actually use a triple ester basestock and to my knowledge the only other is Motul to use this quality (i have no knowledge or experience of Bardhal so have not included them in this statement)

No mate. But I always like to keep the boost fairly low for 50-100 miles after an oil change. Not been out other than going to work since then.

Oi you pair of gits.... bugger off.
I just like to get everything round the system. It was something Dave Hollamby mentioned a couple of years back after my re-build and it's stuck with me. I'm sure it probably is OTT, but hey ho, my boat floats beautifully thank you! |
