Default Road legal racing car thing

Not sure what it was, looked like a le mans type car . Followed it through roadworks in cross in hand, it had to tip toe through as road was all dug up. Once out the roadworks it went through 5 or 6 gears like a bike, stupidly fast.
So what could it be?
