Default air fuel ratio

I have an air/fuel gauge fitted to my wrx 98wagon but it allways shows it is running lean(to the point that it starts off as lean and after 10 mins of driving its nearly off the scale)
What would be causing this and how could it be sorted ???

Its only ever run on 99ron and is standard all bar the exhaust

Sounds like your lambda sensor is knackered. When they fail they read lean. The Ecu will be throwing in fuel thinking it is running lean so doing little for your mpg. The afr gauge after about 5 mins running should oscillate back and forth between rich and lean at idle and light cruise. Then switch to reading rich when above approx 3000rpm or when generating positive boost.

I would suggest throwing a £30 universal lambda on it. Should sort it and also increase your mpg.

It can struggle to get passed the emission tests, would that point to a failing lambda sensor

Go to http://www.lambdasensor.com/main/subaru3.htm

This will take you to OE fit sensors showing different connector styles.
These cost a bit more but are direct fit as long as you get the correct connector and cable length.

Or select the one you think you need and then go for the universal option, which are half the price.

"Just Lambda part number 250-23000
Description - Universal Zirconia 3 wire
£36.00 inc VAT & UK Carriage"

Or Bosch equiv but universal connector

"Part number LS02
Description - Bosch Universal
£50.40 inc VAT & UK Carriage"

the one you linked too looks the wrong size.
