What turbo next???
Peep's,
Some of you might have seen im currently trying to find a new turbo for my 2000 uk impreza, what i was wondering was: a) what turbo was fitted as standard b) is it worth upgrading, bearing in mind i need reliability (lol) as i have limited funds due to getting married in 2012, and what else would i need to change in terms of parts if i was to bolt a bigger turbo on? c) Is it adviseable to change any other parts like hoses etc when replacing the turbo charger...? thanks for looking |

the uk turbo 2000's have the td04 as standard. If you change the turbo you are gonna need to remap the ecu too, otherwise the fuelling will be all over the place.
the standard ecu can be remapped. You are not gonna sacrifice reliability unless you go well over 300, and you wont do that on a td04 anyway. If it was me, i would change the injectors, fuel pump, and get it mapped, you could see 290bhp, maybe slightly more. You can go for the td05 turbo, fits straight on, you get more go, but you gain a bit of lag too. Either way, if you havent already had the ecu mapped or unlocked, you have to buy an unlock code from prodrive (i think). |

nice one, i had her rolling roaded and that came out at 227bhp which the guy sid was about right with the exhaust and filter i had fiited at the time( gone back to a standard air box now) would a remap alone give any benefit?

a remap would give you some yes, but not a huge amount.
I dont know exactly how much though. have you decatted?? |

i havent done anything with the exhaust but im sure it is a decat, and its f'in loud

best way, have a look at the exhaust from the turbo, if its a straight tube then it is, if its got a bulbous bit right behind the turbo then it isnt. a decat, air filter and a map should see you about 250 ish.

Yep turbo will bolt straight on as it's front entry.

the lag isn'y noticable if you have decat, mine was boosting around 2800 rpm.

on a std TD04 even with a remap there is no need to mess around with injectors or a fuel pump, even when fitting the likes of the STi5 turbo mentioned above you would simply need a Walbro 255 pump as the std (yellow 440's) fitted to the v5 & 6 cars are more than capable up to around 340-350ish

Agree with alyn. I'm still running a stock pump on a vf28 and 335bhp on admittedly maxd 440s.

If your not chasing huge BHP. Then from my experience and opinion I think the TD04 is a very nice turbo for a road car that gives good performance once remapped and very little lag.
My current scoob has a VF28 running circa 300bhp and prior to that was a VF35 running circa 320bhp. And prior to that was a TD04 with a tek2 map running circa 270bhp all in calssic with stock top mounts, and OEM fuel pump. From 0 - 5500rpm which is where I do 95% of my driving the TD04 was a better drive. But it has hardly any go above 5500. But the VF from 5000-7000rpm had lots more legs but was compromissed below 4000rpm. Out of the 3 the best daily driver for me was the TD04 tek2. BHP isn't everything.... TD04's are generally cheap as chips and plentiful because nearly everyone who ownes a scoob seems to go on a wild persuit for BHP. But thats just my personal thoughts, and everyone is different and has different objectives. |

I have a standard my98 apart from magnex centre de-cat and backbox. Im not interested in big power (i.e changing the turbo) but i would like a bit more.. what would you recommend i do?

If its an early MY98 then you will have 380cc injectors in which case you may have to think about a fuel pump and FRP. I was running 305bhp on 380's in a classic with a 2.5 bottom end and VF28 at one point so even if you have 380's then IMO you will be OK, but the injectors are likely to be worked hard and not ideal. p.s Jayfold - Might sound like a sales pitch above and its not. But I do have a low mileage TD04 in my garage loft in VGC that I would let go for £120 give or take if it helps. Drop me a PM if any use to you.

Glad you got yourself sorted, the VF28 is a good turbo and a good compromise between power and lag. And Nicks price was very good,I've seen them go for allot more than what he was selling it for.

Thats TD04 territory, not td05. The td05 wont hit full chat until 4k, even with a decat.
