Default v6 center pod fitting?

Does anyone know how to fit the guage pod in the center of the dash where the lift up lid is?
I have taken the lid off, but the tray seems to be attatched to the heater vents?
Do you have to cut a hole in the bottom or am i being stupid?
Thanks
