induction kit issues
Fitted a hks filter today, but have a few "isssues"
1, When you put your foot flat the engine seems to choke and run lumpy then when revs get to bout 3k it bursts into life. 2, When driving along maybe half acelerator you get a strange whooping noise and whoshing from the filter when u lift off the gas. Sounds strange and concerning. Do i need to remap to acomodate the filter? is this normal to get the noise? should i just stick to stock filter as i dont have any major mods? would i be better off with a panel filter instead? Any tips/help apreciated |

When i was looking to mod was told stick to the standard box with panel filter(http://www.greenfilters.com/)and for it to be a dry filter not wet as these can cause maf problems standard is good for up to 300ish bhp.To give it a bit more noise i have removed the snorkel behind the wing.To be on the safe side i would put the standard back on.

The general opioion seems to be a panel filter is best up to 400bhp,after that cone induction is better.
Ive seen quite a few probs with the cone induction getting wet and causing issues. So unless you really love the noise that induction provides id stick with a panel filter. One of the best free flowing panel filters around is the JR filter. It gave me 2bhp more on my old car over standard one...not a great deal, but as Tesco's say...every little helps....

Shouldn't get any running issues as severe as you describe.
Agree with some of what has been sais above. On a Classic the standard airfilter is good for about 300-320BHP. If you want 340+ then need to change to an induction kit. Did you disconnect the MAF and/or battery when you changed. If so you may have a faulty MAF and the ECU cannot re-adjust to suit the fault. The ECU learn's over a long period of time to work with a partially faulty MAF. If you do an ECU reset or disconnect the battery the MAF values return to default and you get rough running. I would suggest swapping back to the stock airbox to see if it cures the fault. The extra noise is the sucking and dumping of air normally hidden by the plastic box of the standard airbox. On the subject of HKS Filters, I have found these to give very poor filtration and have seen 2 cars with dirty or damaged MAF's after using them. My recomendation for Induction kits are Apexi Power intake, K&N or RCM For Panel Filter 'Green', K&N or JDM STi,the Green filter has very good flow for a panel filter. |

I did do a ecu reset after i fitted it and no problems were highlighted,
Went out this morning and perforamnce was terrible till i got past 3.5k and once at about 5k the engine almost stalled itself and backfired as soon as i got home tonight i refitted the old filter system and no problems. Guess ill just stick to a panel then, Any1 interested in the hks filter gimme a pm |
