Default Car tax changes

Or VED, or rip-off tax, or whatever you want to call it.

So i've just noticed that it looks like newage owners are about to get shafted? Yes, I know the post-56 plate owners have been shafted for years, but those of us with a pre-56 plate car sat in the lower tax bracket for all this time.

My Bug WRX emits 242g/km, which puts it into Band L. I've looked back over my emails when i've re-taxed it (after being SORN'd) and it looks like its cost me:

2021 - £357
2023 - £415
2024 - £434

I think those numbers are based on paying monthly via direct debit, if I'd paid 12 months up front it would be cheaper.

So it looks from the doc below that it will be going up to £710 - or £745 if I pay monthly.

Seriously, WTF? It looks like they've got rid of the jump in 2006 and just lumped everything from 2001 - 2017 in one category.

I know it's not to the same level but they've done the same for the post 2017 stuff as well, my daughters boyfriend has been paying £30 a year for a 1.4 Peugeot, it's now jumped to £190 which appears to be the flat rate for anything post 2017 with just an increased first year payment.

Hopefully that helps. Don’t think that applies to you at the very high banding yet.

The bit you've highlighted is for Alternative Fuels cars in your chart?
It's a bit confusing as the bit where it says cars pre-2006 can't go above Band K tallies up with how it used to be, hence bugs/blobs were always cheaper to tax that 2006-onwards hawks.

But it shows petrol cars in the top table for band L shows £710. I doubt VPower is classed as an alternative fuel

Ah, hang on, I'm being a muppet! (it has been known.... )

The line at the bottom 'Band K includes cars...' applies to both tables, not just the bottom one for alternative fuels.

Panic over. Phew.
Nothing to see here folks
