Smile New Member 2001 WRX

Hi All, just joined as i recently bought a 2001 WRX. Plan is to do a few minor mods then use the car to learn to track as have never done a track day before and don't have the balls or skill (yet) to track my other car.
Already booked in to get Neil at Slowboy to remap as it's had a couple of things done in the past but doesn't seem to have been remapped to take account of the mods.
Hoping my first track experience will be next Wednesday (5th June) at Brands but don't think i'll have had time to upgrade brakes etc before then so will take it very easy.
I'm popping along to brands tomorrow to get them to noise test the car before committing to the evening of the 5th. (it does seem a bit on the deep and noisy side!). Hopefully meet some of you at events in the future.

Seems this is the only picture of the car I've taken so far and it's not a great one!

Looks a nice clean one ! Let us know how you get on at track day. Brakes and tyres are your main thing to think about.

Welcome to SES fella

I'd give the brakes a quick bleed, hopefully the pads are decent enough brands isn't too heavy on everything.

Will do thanks, there's plenty of meat left on the brakes which is a bit annoying really but i'm thinking even taking it easy i'll eat through them so then will think about what discs/pads to go with after that. And i think the photo is a bit deceiving, it's not bad but it's a little rough round the edges!

The stock 4pots are good in a lighter classic like an Ra but I found in a new age they won’t cope with much heat. Best to do short sessions if you don’t want to cook things. And warm up and cool down laps.

yeah I've not decided yet whether to keep the standard calipers and just do discs and pads or whether i need to change calipers too. Brands evening is 4 x 15 minutes sessions i think so should be ok just for this one hopefully, i'll take it very easy for my first time anyway.

to SES..

In my opinion to have a quality brake fluid is a must, equally as important as pads and discs..

I would defo get a baffled sump to for track work..

Having tracked a WRX with 4 pots on, there is no point throwing money at disc/pad upgrades hoping it will be enough. The calipers just aren't big enough and don't dissipate the heat sufficiently. Even in 15 minute sessions you will find the brakes fade if you start to push on.

It did go really well thanks, next one is booked for August. As expected I ate through the brakes very quickly so have just fitted G-Hook discs and CL pads all round. Once they're bedded in they should be a bit better. Will see how that goes, if they're not up to it then will go better calipers.
