Default A new family adventure

Hello all, didn't know where to post this, but should be OK here as part of it is to do with subaru.

As some of you know Ciaron (my son) has been doing very well in go karting.
Ciaron is in the junior academy at Bayford Meadows.

Ciaron is at the top of the leader board at the moment.

We where asked last year if Ciaron wanted to race professionally, but we needed our own kart to do that and at that time they where very expensive and was hard to find the right one, so we stopped looking and Ciaron carried on at the junior academy which they provide a hire kart.

So last week, I was looking on the bayford meadows site and I see a new post.
What I saw was something I'd been looking for last year so I email the guy out of interest.

It was the right Kart with the correct engine with very low hours and a trailer wow

I couldn't believe it 😁

The guy bought everything at top price, but when his son went to join the championship, he couldn't meet the weight requirements, so they couldn't take part and he lost interest.

We picked everything up last Thursday and myself, Cheryl and Ciaron started to strip down the kart and set everything up for Ciaron, so he can start to do some track days before he joins the championship.

We removed the engine, to change oil, air filter etc.
This part I like, we need this engine to be in the championship because its a 211cc subaru engine with a scooby air cooler.

The championship is the junior subaru championship.DSC_0544.jpgDSC_0542.jpgDSC_0546.jpgDSC_0541.jpeg

Not to much driving, 8 rounds at bayford meadows, 2 rounds at lydd and 1 round at clay Pigeon (Southampton)

So only clay which is a long drive, that one is done in August while kids are on summer holidays, which helps as most people drive down Friday night and back home late Sunday night.

Ciaron would love too....
But as Ciaron said, when you drive a go-kart it's the driver that controls the kart, F1 has so much technology, takes the fun out of it.

My first update,

We have the trailer and kart etc

I used my brother in laws dicovery to pick every thing up.

So I needed to get a tow bar.

So my daily went under the knife on Saturday and I proceeded to strip my civic down.

All went to plan, not even the weather was going to stop me ☔ DSC_0566.jpgDSC_0568.jpegDSC_0570.jpgDSC_0575.jpegDSC_0576.jpg

Some updates,

Ciaron passed his MSA arks test today, and today was his first proper day in his kart with a freshly rebuild engine.

Started on wets with a lap time of 1:13.00
End the day on Slicks and a final lap time of 0:56.33

Had a wonderful day and weather improved as the day went on. DSC_2066.jpgDSC_2072.jpegDSC_0803.jpgDSC_1998.jpgIMG_20181205_122050_906.jpegDSC_0800.jpeg

Update;
Ciaron is all signed up for this years junior subaru championship (BMKR), our kart number is 72, all 10 rounds will be at bayford meadows for this year with the chance to do other evens next year.
We have all licences, new tyres and spares.
Had a practice day with all the subaru racing teams a couple of weeks ago.

Had to make some changes to the kart as all the others where faster out the corners in the first round but a change in sprocket size sorted that out for the rest of the day and put Ciaron right in the action.

Well the family adventure starts this weekend.
Ciaron finished his winter championship in the hire Karts and came 3rd with a 2nd place win on the last race.

We start Saturday with 4 practice sessions in our class (17 teams) in the championship and with 120 karts have entered for the championship in different classes, so will be a very busy weekend for the first of 10 rounds.

Karts ready,
Transponder mount fitted
New front clip fitted.
Test day tyres ready on rims
New Race tyres ready
And a new set of wets.
All under the stairs staying nice and warm..

Hello all, what a weekend we had Saturday wasn't the best day for testing due to weather.

But the set up we went with worked well.

We qualified 13th out of 17 and finished the last race 12th.

We have taken a lot away from the weekend and hope to improve on our set up and times.

But to finish as well as we did was fantastic.

Round 2 of the junior subaru championship
(BMKR)

This was a coulpe of weeks ago, haven't had a chance to sit down and do some posts etc but here we go.

Saturday pratice day, (20 April)
Team Edg & son had a plan for this weekend to work more on Weight distribution and gearing as we wanted to get into the 51 seconds a lap.
Ciarons best lap in round 1 in March was 52.12 on race tyres.
On test tyres 52.50

So with the new set up, practice day we done 52.00

If all was right we should be in the 51s with our race tyres.

Onto Sunday, Ciaron qualified 13th out of 18 with his times down to 51,76

Race 1 and 2 very similar, with Ciaron down to 12th.

But in the last race it all started to go horribly wrong, the pack was very close, and Ciaron was on a flyer down to 51.57 a lap.

Well I say horrible, the spectators loved the action.....

On lap 3 Ciaron was chasing kart 80 with 2 other karts behind, as they went into turn 5 the kart behind late braked and ended up on the back of Ciarons kart damaging the seat and rear axle but not enough to stop Ciaron.

Ciaron stayed on the power and other kart dropped back off and Ciaron was free to go.

Now I/we thought that was it the race would end with Ciaron dropping down to 16th.

But no Ciaron managed to keep going and court up with the pack and was getting a tow again, down to 15th then 14th, with 2 clean passes Ciaron was free to keep pushing.

Well kart 80 witch he just passed had better ideas, he was using Ciarons tow and trying to get around at each turn, and on the next lap he did but we geared Ciarons kart to be faster out the corners which again with a tow and speed out the corners he got round again, the long way round.
Now kart 80 wasn't having non of that and with both of them side by side into a corner with both rear tyres hitting, they became entangled with each other and spinning out, yellow flags, Marshall runs over and frees them from each other and off they go again.

2nd to last lap, Ciaron was still in front of kart 80 after the incident but kart 80 was after more points, again trying everything he could, into turn 4, kart 80 decided to lunge down the inside and late brake on a 90 degree corner.
He went straight under Ciarons kart breaking his steering and into the tyre wall but OK, Ciaron was airborne by around 2 feet, but again Ciaron managed to drive on, but looking at his time there was a problem and Ciaron was black flagged and into the Paddock he went.

Ciaron was OK and asked if the other lad was OK, which he was just unhappy with the outcome.

We asked Ciaron about the kart and said when the kart landed it landed on the left front first and the was pulling to the right after.

Once back at our trailer we checked the wheel alignment which was out by 2mm but also we couldn't line up the laser hub to hub, which is a chassis issue..

Nothing more would be done as the day was coming to an end.

So the next day at home I stripped the kart back to the chassis and trailered to project one.

Chassis was put on jig and the front was out by 6mm.
10mins later all good and ready for the next race. I was also told that some race teams have there own jigs and jig there karts after each race.
(every tenth of a second counts)

Some how Ciaron wasn't even phased by what happened he just wants to get out and go in round 3 in a couple of week.

Dont think I've but down a spanner since that weekend 🥴

After all that we now have a kart which is like new.
New seat, new rear axle I completely rebuild the kart.

Roll on round 3 🤕😀😁

Great write up Sean, glad Ciaron was ok, certainly sounds like he has the potential to go far with not being fazed by the incident?

Round 3 (19 May) late post due to being very busy.

Team Edg & son had a good run today in round 3 of the Junior Subaru Championship at Bayford Meadows.

We are still learning the ropes as a new team and Ciaron managed 12th today.

Ciaron was running 9th most of the final race but run wide on the back straight and lost 2 places, but we know we have pace, just need to do some homework and more seat time.
