From Scooby to Cossie!
After just over three years in the Subaru scene I sold my JDM Blob STI as I fancied a change and made the decision to buy a 93 K Plate Nouveau Red Sierra Cosworth 4x4.
Initially I wanted a 3 door but prices have really shot up recently, so I eventually settled on a Sapphire. At the weekend I made a 500 mile round trip to look at this one and drove it home that day. Really pleased with it so far. Gave it a clean and took it out for a drive yesterday, here are some pictures.... |

Yep, like that. Always preferred the look of the Sapphs over the 3dr personally. Certainly looks like its been well looked after

Very nice, Haven't seen a cossie on the Road for a very long time, and seriously regret selling the ones I had at the time.... Mucho respect and admiration to you for taking the leap. Enjoy and don't be a stranger to the forum, many ex and current old school ford guys in here. !

It's running the Motorsport developments 380 conversion, t34 turbo, Siemens black 55's, Bosch 044, 200 block with updated head gasket, group a filter, 3bar map sensor, pace intercooler, plus other goodies including ap front brakes. Ideally I'd like to get it set up and put on the rollers for piece of mind. It's done 2k miles in the last five years!

Very nice, don't see many Sierra Cossies about anymore.
Magenta is one of my fave colours for these, along side the grey & moondust. Also prefer the sapphire to the 3 door. What sort of condition is it in underneath? Sounds like a fair few of these have given in to tin worm now |

There's a small bubble on each rear arch which I'm getting sorted in July at some point and surface rust on the petrol tank which I will remove and repaint. Apart from that its good underneath been fully waxoiled/undersealed from new and the boot floor is mint and the rear chassis legs are fine, it's never been welded and still has its original panels.

Ooooo pretty. I had a white Saph Cossie a few years ago. Lovely motor. I used to find it would go wrong on average twice a month but then it was a bit of a pup. It would normally happen if I left it standing for a week or so without being driven. Nice splitter on the front too. If you get bored of that, have a look at a Laguna splitter, they fit straight on and look pretty smart.

Holy thread revival!
So I still own the Cossie, currently tucked away for winter. I have covered approximately 4,000 miles since I've owned it, going to various ford shows and am a member of the RS owners club. I do still enjoy the car but am rather tempted by the new RS or maybe even something different like a C63 saloon or even a BMW M2. Basically a more modern car. Values of the Cosworths seem to be rising and if I did sell mine I'd be hard pushed to get another as it is a nice example. I read on the Ford forums that people do seem to regret selling theirs. I suppose if I were to place an order on a new RS I'd still have at least another year enjoying the Cossie as the waiting list is quite long. What are your thoughts? Matthew |

Personally i would stay with the sapph just look at it also its a family car that has serious power no fancy electronic gizmos to go wrong just get in and drive it .

Wouldn't sell an appreciating asset for a depreciating one, the new RS I wasn't blown away with. I've ended up with an ST3 estate for the daily and got a type ra for fun. Found 36k for a fully optioned one just too much.
If you can get the more modern car without selling it that would be my choice

Getting out now isn't a great plan in my opinion. The price will go only one way.
As Chris said, if you can keep it and get something to complement it to scratch the modern car itch, then that's the thing to do. If not, I like your choices of alternatives. |

My other car is a mk7 GTD which I use daily, just think a more modern fast hatch or saloon car that I can take out for a nice Sunday drive might be more appealing?

Maybe I should go and have a drive of the new RS. Anyone who owns an RS now that has had a cossie that can provide a comparison? I suppose the Sierra is more raw and the RS is more refined.

I wouldn't call the Focus RS a weekend toy, yeah it's leaps and bounds ahead of the saph with the interior but it's not as much of an occasion getting into it and driving. If you've got a mk7 gtd I'd just stick with what you have. The Saph is just going to carry on going up in value if it's a clean as it looks in the pictures plus it's a much more raw experience. Mine was a 2wd, did test some of the later 4wd cars

The waiting list for the RS is not as long as you may think. But saying that it's also not as great as car as first thought.
It's a good car no doubt but it doesn't offer everything you expect from a RS. Great through the twisties but power delivery is quite boring and the seating position is very high and almost MPV like. Of all the cars I drove last winter (S4, S3 s-tronic, S3 manual, Cupra 290 DSG, Focus RS, Audi RS3 previous gen) to find an alternative to my Classic Scoob the RS was closest to delivering. There was an awful lot of hype drummed up by Ford and I think a lot of 'sweetening' of test driver reviews. But now it's been out a while these opinions and reviews are changing. From the initial reviews I thought the RS would end up winning EVO car of the year or at least be near the top. But it ended up near the bottom and well and truly beaten by the Golf Club sport !!!!!! Have you thought about the Mercedes A45 AMG or CLA45 AMG. Second hand ones are under £30K. I hadn't considered them last year as I assumed they were FWD but they are 4WD. Hence now on my radar when fitted with the Aero kit and AMG performance exhaust http://www.pistonheads.com/classifie...fiD0CLWcr0X.03 With regard to the Saf......keep it if you can I sold my scoob in 2011 and regretted it. But I was lucky enough to buy it back for the same money 18 month later. I don't regret that happening, as it has really made me appreciate what it is and what it does for me. |

look reasonable BUT new Mercs seem to have a huge amount of warranty issues (mainly wiring related) and after speaking to an ex MB workshop manager of a large dealership i dont think it would be my money........

Just to be devils advocate.
Love the Saph and had at least 3 in my day and If I knew what they would fetch now would have loved to have kept them......... But only to now flog them about now and cash in and put a potfull of dosh in the bank and put some of the money into a well sorted modern fast car and still leave money in the bank.. Basically classic cossies, superb cars and if your looking at it from an investment perspective then keep the cossie and get a something like a 335d to compliment it... But your only on this planet once and modern fast cars are in a different league now, and offer something very different that can still offer thrills, but also keep you alive if you crash it, be far more reliable, something that you can drive everyday, and if your are one for status it will give you more cudos to the masses rather than a select few that would appreciate what an old cossie is worth. Also any GOOD fast modern car will become a classic of sorts over time, look at the bi Turbo RS4's for example now worth more than the V8 RS4 which are also now demanding strong money. GOOD subaru classics, WR1, RB320, Type R's now also demanding good money. The new RS will still be a classic and well may be the last of the RS's which will ultimately and possibly demand the strongest RS premium yet in 50 years time... Just my 2 pennies worth... |
