Advice Please...
Really really stuck.
Some of you may know I am getting a 2006 WRX STI imported from Japan, not long now, it's due to be with me by this time next month. I'm having it remapped to run safely on UK fuel but have been advised to get a few bits to insure it is health. The parts I have got are the following: - K&N Panel Filter - PFR7B Plugs - Aeromotive Fuel Pump - 3 Port Solenoid - Cambelt Kit & Waterpump - Mud Flaps (I bought these as where I go quite often is rather muddy/dusty). To fit all these (just labour) and a remap I have been quoted £765, because it's 2 hours away and he'd need it for 2 days we would have to stay in a hotel. This is where I'm stuck. I'm not a qualified mechanic but I have been working on cars since I was young. My dad is a retired qualified mechanic and has offered to help, together we have done engine rebuilds, cambelts (even a cambelt on a classic subaru) etc. (these have all been on our own cars over the years). We have the space and a lot of tools (compressors etc.). If we did the work ourselves I'd still need to get the remap done which is £350, that would be a massive saving of £475 (that's including £60 for a hotel). I'm worried as it's the most expensive car I've ever owned and having waited so long for it I don't want anything to go wrong while I do it. What would you all do if you had the choice? Sorry for the essay. Last edited by swrx2810; 24-04-2016 at 05:40 PM. |

Everything is easy to fit you wont need the 3 port for a while as standard 2 port is up to the job and why you not choose 255lph Walbro fuel pump ?

If you're not comfortable doing it, don't do it. You'll never forgive yourself if you cock it up. Only you know if there's a concern that you might not be able to do the work. Personally, I wouldn't feel confident in having the cambelt done by a non-specialist, but that's just me. |

I have been thinking about it and have decided to do it all myself. I have already bought the solenoid and the fuel pump, was advised to get that pump by a specialist so I did .
I'll take my time and double check everything. |

Thanks everyone. Could anyone recommend what engine oil is best to use? Will be doing that too.

Also I am thinking of getting a small sub to add a bit of bass. Does anyone know if the wiring will be okay with a jap double din stereo or would I need an adaptor?

Just be careful when doing cam belt, I've known a few that haven't been timed properly.
Haven't had work done by Stuart at ESMS, but have crossed his path a few times and he has been very helpful and chatty. So would probably use him if I needed to. When doing 3 port, make sure you leave restrict or pill in pipe work, I think they are still required, someone can hopefully pitch in, long time since I did my 3 port on my old car.

I certainly wouldn't want to do the cam belt myself, and i'd want a receipt from a Subaru specialist that proves its been changed for the car's service history (a receipt that says you bought the cambelt kit doesn't prove it was fitted ) Anything I don't feel doing myself gets done by Southern Motor Developments in Newhaven who are also Subaru experts, so that's another option. Good luck with whatever you go with |

Thanks I've sent you a PM. I'll be fine with everything apart from the boost solenoid. Unsure of the 3rd pipe...

Use a fully synthetic 10w40 regular road or 10w50 fast road light track or even 10w60 if you plan mad track abuse.

Ring Alan at AS Performance and get everything from him!
Personally I'd want to get a stamp for the cam belt at least on a car that new - Stuart (ESMS) or many other local specialists would do it for a reasonable cost. Where are you going for the remap?

I have nanotech in there, and nanotech ready to go in - perhaps I should filter the oil as I tip it in just in case!

I've got an unopened 5L bottle of millers 10w60 here too, can't remember if its the nanotech or standard. Not going to waste it as i've never had problems before but i'll pour it into another container first and check there's no settlement of addictives or jelly etc before actually putting it into the car.
