Re: Speedo stopped working on classic
Assuming its a cable driven speedo on ver1, which i beleive it is, then i would suggest you remove the speedo/rev counter pod, very easy to do, put your hand up behind the dash to pop the speedo cable off, you have to squeeze the plug to release it, then remove the screws holding the facia surround then the two screws holding the pod in. Once its out you can go for a drive, or even just push car back and forward to see if the end of the speedo cable is rotating.
If it is rotating then at least you know its not the cable or gearbox, also you will have a converter at the gearbox end this is to convert from kilometers to miles. I had the c clip come off the cable as it joins the converter wich caused speedo to stop. |

Re: Speedo stopped working on classic
Cheers mate. My bro told me it had happened but just taken it for the first drive in a month and a half and the engine check light is alos on and limiting it to 4500rpm.
Could this have anything to do with it, hope so! Dave

Re: Speedo stopped working on classic
Failure of the speed delimiter electronic gizom fitted by the importer or owner, wired to the speed input wire on ecu.
check the ecu for strange boxes wired to it and double check the connections especially is they are scotch locked. you could try a temporary bypassas the box usually sits inline.this may get the speedo working but you willbelimited to 112mph (which can be over-ridden if chipped ) or could be the speedo head unit which is mounted on the back of the clocks, this converts the cable mechanics to electronic magic which then drives the speedo. You can either change your speedo assay for a new or second hand unit or you could get hold of another cable driven JDM speedo and remove the good sensor from it and fit it to yours. To do this you will need to remove the speedo assay from the instrument pack and then remove the rear cover where the speedo cable attaches. Behind this you will a tiny plastic cog that is driven by the turning motion of the cable and a very small oblong sensor that is held in place by two screws. This sensor is triggered by the toothed cog & in turn sends a speed signal to the ECU. The sensor is not available as a spare part from Subaru. Failure of either can cause speed failure, check engine light and limp mode (4,500rpm) |

Re: Speedo stopped working on classic
K, managed to deduce that the speedo cable is not turning. The converter appears to be right by the turbo!!! Looks like the clip may be slightly damaged but not sure if its just cosmetic. Where can i get a converter asap and how easy is it to change?
Cheers, Dave
