Hawkeye PPP aftermarket exhaust replacement - HELP!!!
Hi, I've owned my '57 plate WRX PPP for over a year now. The car is great, except that the Prodrive b/box totally muffles the flat four burble I love.
It's time to change the exhaust for something that sounds louder and raspy, that puts a smile on my face when I turn the ignition on and blip the throttle! However it's got to be bearable on longer journeys & motorways. If I get a slight performance gain too then that's a bonus, but the main thing I'm looking for is a nice exhaust note I've looked at lots of movies on YouTube of different scoob exhausts & read different opinions & am now confused on which way to go! All I know is I want to get it sorted in the next few weeks. I need the replacement elements/system to be MoT friendly and don't mind spending up to £500-700. I'm a bit green when it comes to car mods so please respond in layman's terms!! Any help would REALLY be appreciated |

I too have an afterburner. It's a nice bearable loud to me and the misses can deal with it too if we're out on a run somewhere.

I had the exact same thing when I bought my Hawkeye. The Prodrive box completely stopped any of the sound a Subaru is meant to make.
I ended up getting a Milltek system through Alyn at ASPerformance. It's by no means the loudest system (good for trackdays etc.) but sounds just perfect IMHO. It is quiet enough not to be annoying on long motorway hauls, but sounds great when you give it a boot full. I doubt there was any real change in performance as I decided to leave the cats in place for ease at MoT time. After fitting and a change of air filter, it made 316 bhp and then after a conservative remap made 338 bhp. Can't remember torque figures off the top of my head, sorry. |

Thanks chaps. I went to a meet a couple of months ago & heard BigE's afterburner. I liked the exhaust note but was unsure because his is obviously fitted to a bugeye STI not a Hawk WRX.
When you say "Afterburner" do you mean just the back box?? Do I need to go for a 2.5"? Is it worth changing the centre section while I'm at it? |

Thanks rossmarts. When you say 'system' do you mean back box plus other exhaust sections?
I've never heard of Milltek, so will check it out. I've dealt with AS Performance before for brake parts & was very pleased with the service & advice... |

Yes, I got a back box and an unresonated centre section. 2.75" with a 4" tailpipe. Was about £400, but that was just over 2 years ago so not sure what the going rate would be now.

I've got the un resonated centre section and the 2.5inch afterburner back box, not really sure what the DB noise is but I think I'd struggle to get through a track day test. . I too still have my down cat in place and want to change to a 2.5inch sports cat but cant find one easily. Everything avaliable seems to be 3inch!

Had exactly the same issue with my 06' Hawkeye. Went through various combinations - simple Prodrive BB, then removed the center section for a unresonated one, then the 2nd short decat pipe (after the downpipe - does not affect MOT...), then swapped to an STI Genome BB.....
Finally swapped the Genome for a Scoobyworld AfterBurner which sounds great, and not too much drone on the motorway - no idea if it would pass a TT test though... So to recap - phewww... I now have a 2nd decat, unresonated centre section and Afterburner BB. Their new Raptor BB sounds awesome mind... J.

My car ('05 STi PPP) was fitted with a Cobra Sport cat back system when I bought it. Sounded nice, but droned like a mofo on the motorway.
Then tried a very lightweight STi exhaust which eliminated the drone... but was too quiet! Finally settled on a Nur Spec R. I'm still running the front cat and thats spot on for me. Flat four burble at all times, nice growl when you put your foot fown and no drone on the motorway, hurrah! My advice would be to have a listen at a few meets though: can't beat hearing an exhaust for real to decide whether you like it or not.

I had the same on my 06 STI. As already mentioned, part of it is the resonated section that joins the back box. Remove that and replace it with a non res pipe (about £100 if I recall correctly). I then changed my back box for a TSL group N and later an afterburner vortex. It then had the burble back, though I dont think you will ever get it sounding as deep as the 2.0 models. Stll sounded a million times better though.

Had this on my blob too. It was my favourite exhaust for the sound - not too loud, but loud enough

Thank you all for your advice. I'm going to call Scoobyworld this week & order either an afterburner vortex or raptor and a de res centre pipe
Might go for the raptor as its 3" and will lend itself to future mods like a sports de cat down pipe... Cheers |
