Cone or panel air filter?
Been looking recently at a few project threads on here as you do to see what else i can tinker with, I fancy having a little go at changing the air filter to a cone type and possible running in a cold feed from a duct under the indicator but I keep thinking to myself is there or will there be any real benefits to the car from this other than it will look nice under a closed Bonnet? Does a uprated panel filter deliver just as much air in the OE box as a cone type??

keep the panel filter and remove the intake snorkel and you lose some of the induction system air resistance

I have thought about doing that and just running up a cold pipe from below using the front vent straight up and into the OE box from the inner wing.

Your start having Maf issues if you go for a cone

Whats the cause for that then??
I know pre oiled filters can bugger them up after a period of time or if re oiled to much.

They get damp when left in the winter/damp summer and suck **** on to the element... I went through so many when I first got my RA

I've not had any MAF issues with the Apexi.
The main killer of the MAF when fitting an induction kit is vibration so the MAF/Filter needs to be supported. You can get good gains if you are already around the 300bhp mark but you will need it remapped. Saying that though my classic on the apexi ecu and apexi filter needef only very little map changes only really for performance than safety/fuelling. But the Hawk STi needed quite a bit of MAF rescaling to stop it running dangerously lean when fitting an RCM sized K&N. |

if you have an OE DV fitted, you get a very subbtle DV sound when you give it some like that |

Mine always failed after driving in or after heavy rain falls... I changed to Simtek in the end to get rid of the Maf

I'm kinda thinking I may just wait until I get the urge to change the ecu before I do anything else then.
I have changed the panel filter for a green cotton one when I got the car a few years back and recently changed the fuel pump to a walbro 225 due to the original slowly becoming worn and tiered , the car is running really nice and steady at the mo at 282bhp so I think I'll leave it as is then. Thanks for you input and thoughts though guys.

dry filters are good iv had no issues as of yet altho my classic and a oil type and killed 2 mafs, I had the apexi and it seemed to strangle the motor a little not sure if anyone else has experenced this? was one of the causes of it boggin down, put the k&n n back on a she ran sweet again now running a blitz sus which is spot on!

Apexi has been fine for me and gained about 25hp with just a minor map tweak.
Good filtration too. The filtration on the blitz is about as good as an old sock with a hole in it. |
