Little guide to German traffic regulations
Hi guys, I posted the following on IE and Nick (BlueBugEye) asked me if I could post it on here, too. Possibly most of you know the regulations or at least most of them, but maybe it's a little help for guys who do the trip for the first time.
This is the sign at the beginning of a speed limit and it means in this case 70 kilometers per hour (not miles ). The end of the speed limit is shown by either this sign or a sign like these: After these signs you can do 100 kph (about 67 mph) if not in a village or town. In villages or towns the speed limit is 50 kph (about 35 mph). The beginning of a town or village is shown by this sign: At the end you'll see this sign: After that sign it's automatically 100 kph if no sign tells you something different. Sometimes there are also speed limits of 30 kph (about 20 mph) inside villages. On the motorways the speed limit signs are the same. And if you see blue signs like this with an 80 or 120 or 130 on it, this means the so-called suggested speedlimit but you are allowed to drive faster. That's the one you lot like so much. It's the same when you see a sign with a crossed out '130'. But please always have in the back of your head that when an accident happens, say, some plonker pulls out too close in front of you, you will always be partly blamed for the accident. Another important sign is this one. You are only allowed to drive into the direction the arrow shows you. And please never forget to have your driving license and passport with you when in the cars. It's an obligation in Germany. Don't get me wrong, guys, this is certainly not meant to spoil the fun for you lot. I just want to make sure you don't do anything wrong just because you didn't know about it. I would feel so bad if I hadn't told you earlier. Last edited by Kerstin; 26-03-2013 at 08:02 PM. |

Thanks for that.
Remember also " Ein Grosser Bier, Bitte" for when you get to the other end. You may want to substitute Eines for Zwei, Drei or Veir etc etc.

They were one of my first spoken sentences when I was young as we travelled a lot to Frankfurt. My father thought it would be funny to get me to order a beer in German when I was only 3 or so years old. Oh and Prost!

Hee hee, also a way to do it, Ian. I think copying and pasting that blue sign didn't work and I didn't notice. Ooooops. I've edited the first post now. |
