Cut out rough idle not drivable
Hi,
Was driving my car home from somerset yesterday and after 3 and half hours of perfect driving the car just cut out on the A27 like it had ran out of fuel [ V4 sti type-r ] now when i start it runs really low revs and almost stalling and when you touch the throttle theres no revs and sometime dies,
Anyone had a similar problem ? Thanks |

i have just recently it turned out to be a broken coil pack and poor wiring on another ! i think the damp/wet had got into the shoddy wiring someone had done ive now sorted it and all seems well maybe worth whipping them coil packs out and taking a look for cracks ??

v4 only has the single top mounted coilpack and they are not very common to fail..............
can you hear the fuel pump prime on initial key-on??

Its seem to fire on the fuel thats been primed as the revs pick up straight away then it bogges down then stalls ? |

i seem to remember reading somewhere that the bag filter thing on the walbro was smaller than the one on the OE pump and that sometiems people had probs and had to fit the OE filter to the walbro pump.
Let someone esle confirm though cuz I remember reading something about it a while ago, but not the details ! |

I usualy use http://www.importcarparts.co.uk/ for the odd bits that others don't stock. If its not on their web site, phone them as they do more than is on the web site

I tried it again today and the pump is definitely priming when the Ignition is switched on
It will fire up rev up to 1000 rpm then splutter a few seconds then stall also no cel light either |

MAF ?
Did you go through much standing water, as it can draw into the airfilter then contaminate the MAF |

Do you think it might be the fuel filter ? |

doubt it would be filter.
If its mafless i suppose ecu could of reset or lost some of its constants. |

would it be worth pluging the two black plugs together to see what codes it gives?? just a thought as i had to do so on my classic,

Dose any one have a crank shaft sensor that I can borrow to see if its that ?

I pluged in the black plugs under the dash and no fault codes

If your running MAFLess you must be running an aftermarket ECU, therefore I believe the black diagnostic connectors are inactive.
Do you have the standard ECU and a MAF to hand that you can plug in, just to fire it up ? |

what ECU are you on?? if its an aftermarket then the diagnostics plugs wont work...............

its esl mapped by duncan at racedynamix i though the esl retained the origianl diagnostics ?

Correct it should do.
I would get it checked out. ESL are good but with the few I mapped I did have a couple of issues early on.. I know the 97/98 was in development for years, so there could be a gremlin in there or an issue with their oversea's manufacture quality. I would offer to help but the ESL cable dongle I have only supports the 93-96 ECU's. Is there a link/jumper on the base board you could join/fit to revert back to running the OE onboard base map, then refit the MAF and try. That's if the ESL adaptor hasn't damaged the main board. I think you need to talk to Dunc's |

Prob best i speak to dunc ill do more damage than good lol
Do you no of anyone with an ecu spare to try ? Appreciate all your help |

I can ping Andy at ESL and see if he can tell me how to get the ECU to run stock.

Ok mate that woud be good as i still have the maff
it was only mapped a 2 weeks ago so could be some early gremlin |

He suggests you talk to Duncan and obviously defending his product. But did suggest it may be the MAP sensor (as MAFless uses this alot more) or a wiring issue.
Although I would of thought the ECU diagnostics would of picked up a MAP sensor fault. It's not easy to revert it back to a standard ECU, unlike the earlier models. But I guess getting the car to Duncan is now difficult. What code is on your ECU case i.e big lettersn '8S' or similar. Do you know anyoe local with an 97/98 Apexi you could try. I've got a spare MAP sensor if you can get over to Hastings to collect. |

Right well today i tried a crank sensor a map sensor a standard ecu with pluging the maff back in all to no joy
So i guess the next stage is to test fuel pressure and voltage to the pump |

Did you swap injectors as you may have one or more not sealed well or a seal failure causing partial flooding.

No they are standrad but i did have a versdion 7 bottom end fitted piror to the mapping

Have you had the plugs out yet ?
#33
no not yet but would it rev up 1000rpm on start up then stall if there down ?
Some one eles meationed maybe its the loom that has big block next to the air filter and the loom goes under the inlet manifold its rare but some time they they break down broken wire ect ? |
#34
More to check there condition / colour then to check if failing
#35
ill pop em out this weekend might just replace them any way,
what do you think about the loom ? |
#36
Did it do exactly the same with the OE ECU and MAF ?
It does sound like it's running on the primed fuel then stalling. Try cranking it with the coil disconnected to pump through the primed fuel then try again without re-priming ie don't turn ignition off. See if it starts and stalls in the same manner |

Ill try that on sat, guessing will tell if its a pump issue ? As before thanks for the help Last edited by Type-r-russ; 05-02-2013 at 10:47 PM. |

Do you have a gauge on your FPR assuming you are running more pressure on the 440's.

so i took out the pump assembly today and there was a split in the fuel hose which was causing the lack of fuel, I did fit the new rcm pump any way and it fired straight up so i now have a spare working walbro if anyone wants one Thanks for all the help |

Glad you got it sorted mate.
Was the fuel hose split inside the tank then, so fuel was just pissing back into the tank ? |
#42

Yes the pice of hose that join the pump to the start of the fuel rail
I must admit it felt plastic and cheap like it had no strengh in it compared to the rcm hose |
