Default Classic STI - Cuts out on start-up!

Good evening everyone,

I have an STI v2 (1995) Classic that had done 67K miles. The car is garaged overnight and yesterday morning I reverse the car out of the garage and it cut out on me. Think the car was cold I started by 7 mile trip to work. Half way there, driving the car at 40mph, the car cut out on me again. This time though I couldn't re-start the car.

I called out the breakdown services who couldn't start the car but suspected dead battery. They managed to place my car on a transporter and drop in back to my house. I check the battery and most of the fluid had drained away. So filled it back up again with battery top up fluid, recharge battery +6 hours. Put the battery back in the car and same problem.

Today picked up a new battery from Halfords, placed it in the car, and same problem.

1. Car will start and idles at 1300 rpm for a couple of seconds and then just cuts out - battery light aluminates.
2. If I start the car and keep my foot down on the accelerator (3000 revs) the car will maintain good revs until I remove my foot and let the car idle - cuts out again
3. I have a volt meter in the car which reads 14v when I start the engine
4. Checked for ECU fault codes and none present
4. Did a full ECU reset

I'm suspecting a number of things like..

  • Idle control Valve (would then car still cut out at speed?)
  • Alternator
  • Fuel Pump
Any ideas on what I can check before getting the car dropped off at a garage?

Cheers

Have to say it sounds like fuel pump , but would expect it to cut out at 3k revs also
