Decided a little while ago that my speedline alloys needed a little tart up as they were looking a little tired but thought id do it at home and give it a bash after reading silversurfers first thread on the same type of job a while back.

Nice touch up job from the previous owner, NOT!

Thanks to the good old winter road salt

Original look

A blooming good wash up was needed


Damaged quite bad and didn't think i could make this good.



A nice rub down with some 240, 400 and 600 grade wet and dry and plenty of wipes over after with some babywipes, a tip that was given too me from silversufer! blooming good too, gets up all the gritty bits.

Next a mask up with some very cheap and useful playing cards.



I used Acid #8 etch primer before the alloy paint. Of course Painting the rear of the wheel first so as no over spray from painting the rear last comes through on to the front. sorry if that was confusing.



Next the satin black paint, Purchased from halfrauds and is actually labelled as stealth black alloy paint.

I actually quite liked this look but its a bit lairy! Wished i had a spinning device or whats know as a dolly to get an even blend and an identical look on each spoke.


And as it stands this eve, STI badges turned up today and im very pleased with how its turned out from just using various grades of wet and dry and a few rattle cans. 1 down 3 to go over the next few days.
Don't think ill lacquer them as im quite pleased with the look and don't want to cock it up,plus it states the paint is chip resistant but time will tell. may put some wheel wax on em to stop the ****e attacking them.
No pics of them on the scoob as yet as i have only just ordered the black wheel nuts and don't want any damage or the grotty ones anywhere near the fresh paint.

You may want to consider the laquer as it will give extra protection against chipping and make cleaning a whole lot easier, especially the rear.

great job mate, but i think they'll need lacquer too, can't see them lasting too long with wheel cleaners etc otherwise.

Thanks all, very pleased and just want the weekend to come so i can get on with the others. Just waiting at the window like a little kid for the delivery man who's got me nutsso i can get it back on the car!!

I painted them on a workmate in the conservatory with a few bits covered up. couldn't really do it inside for obvious reasons although i would if i lived on me own \m/. And outside was a no no as there was crap and dust kicking up everywhere. prep took a while especially the rub down and key up, but as i always say, slowly slowly catch's the monkey.

Top Job............

The paint that i used does state that its anti chip and gives a durable finish. If i use a lacquer then it needs to be a satin one as that is how the finish has come out, but im worried now that if i spray over them it could go horribly wrong and go orange peely look.

If you do the card trick just make sure you over lap them slightly, So easy to clean up once the paint has dried and re-usable too. I suppose you could even pop them round the wheel whilst its still on the car for touch up's here and there! With no wind about obviously!!!

Looks fantastic mate. Thats the colour I plan to do mine in the summer. Know exactly what you mean with the laquer. When I painted my old STi alloys I prefered them before we laquered them, but its all down to protection I guess.

Thanks all for the comments, Three more to go.

The playing card mask up is so easy to do and clear up. wouldnt do it any other way from now on.

And yes the playing cards were pinched from the squadron mess's Ginger beer serving bar, i promise to put them back.

I think i may lacquer them but not until i find a good satin one.

Black nuts came through the post so tomo morn the first one will be back on the car and pics will be put up.

Its only a cheap tart up till i can lay my hands on spare funds for some new rims in the summer. Would of had them now but germany trip has taken priority. I would of liked them to stay satin too but finding the lacquer was hard ,so gloss it was. White looks cool but not sure in my style of wheel.

Maybe once they have been on the car a few months and the shine has eased of a tad with hot brake dust and road grit pushed in to them they may look better.

Plus I think once there all on and the scoob is lowered im sure it will ten times better.

Any who im pleased so far even if it is a bit of an arse ache preping and that and im slowly making the scoob my own. Slowly being the main word.

Yeah i kinda see what your saying but im after the complete black look if that makes sense. the silver just doesnt look right, bit odd.

Arse! ,Yeah springs will be put on soon hopfully. At current its on axle stand with all four wheels off.

Having a crisis at the mo with the second one as the black paint doesnt want to take to a certain little patch on the inside of the spoke??? waiting for it to dry then im gonna hit it again with some more etch primer?? Odd.
