I am changing my plate back to a legal one.

No mate, but know someone that has with the same size plate recently. Apparently they are clamping down now. Ridden my luck for 3 years with it!

This is something I have thought of. Need to order a nice new one but before ordering wanted another opinion. May get one, then look at trimming it down.

Yep, definitely the longer one. The square jap style ones only look right when off to one side imo.

Your right I was in my mates car tonight and we got stopped for plates
The back one is illegal apparently even tho nothing bigger will fit in the gap??
Front one is 3\4 size they take photos and inform the. Dvla they then said if you get seen again the dvla remove the number plate from
The car and the only way back is to pay for a Q plate!!

I have found a company that will do a 406mm x 114mm which is basically a standard plate plate but shorter which looks good. Just trying to establish whether it is legal. Think it should be as I dont think there is a specific size, as long as the font, spacing and BS number on the plate are correct.

IIRC So long as the spacing and Lettering meets the regs, you can have 11mm around the top bottom and sides to stay legal

If you take a look at my plates on the Evo none have been exactly legal. However the size of the letters + spacing has been with no problems.

My plate is std but cut down to 11mm top and bottom by the side are bigger to cover two holes but it can be 11mm all round.

Just put me standard cut down one on & it does look cak over the 3/4 plate .

Because there camera vans can't read then

Went through loads of camera vans on motorways over Xmas with the smaller sized plate with legal font and border, and no problems

You can tick a box so BS number etc appears on the plate i.e making them legal. I emailed them today and they came back confirming that a 406mm x 114mm plate (like Keiths above) with the BS number on and where it come from is legal. Without the BS number and maker, its not legal.

www.platesforcars.co.uk Expensive at £23 for a plate, but they seem to be the only people that do that size plate. I could cut one down, but they always end up looking cut down, rather than having decent edges etc.

Post changed after I looked into it....Number plates must now use one specific, mandatory typeface - a very simple sans serif typeface intended to make the numbers easy to read by both humans and automatic recognition systems, which are increasingly being used by the police and other agencies. All hard-to-read variants, such as multiple stroke and italic fonts, are now prohibited. The one decorative variation still permitted is a 3D effect version of the mandatory typeface.

The size and spacing of number plate characters is specified in the regulations, as follows:

Each character must be 79mm high and 50mm wide (except the number 1 or the letter I). The width of each character stroke must be 14mm. There must be a space of 11mm between characters within the same group, and character groups must be 33mm apart. For the purposes of measurement, each character (again, excepting the number 1 or the letter I), regardless of its shape, is treated as a rectangular block of dimensions 79mm x 50mm

Optionally, number plates may display one of the following national emblems: British Union Flag with “GB”, English Flag (St George Cross) with “ENG”, Scottish Flag (St Andrew Cross) with “SCO”, Welsh Flag (red dragon on green/white field) with “Wales” and “Cymru” or Euro Flag (circle of stars) with “GB”. If the Euro/GB configuration is displayed, then the bearer vehicle need not display a separate “GB” emblem when driving within the EU.

The colours and reflectivity of number plates are also specified in the regulations, and there is a British Standard (BS AU 145d) which describes the physical characteristics of number plates, including: visibility, strength and reflectivity. Front plates must have black characters on a white background, while rear plates must have black characters on a yellow background. The British Standard also requires that a number plate must be marked with the following information: the British Standard Number, the name, trade mark, or other means of identification of the manufacturer or component supplier, the name and postcode of the supplying outlet. A non-reflective border is optional. There may be no other markings or material contained on the number plate.

No spaces are allowed apart from separating the numbers from letters

i.e X55 XXX is legal
X 55 XXX isnt
X55XXX isnt

Looking at your plate, I would say its not legal mate as it should have one space between the numbers and last set of letters. Looks nice though!!
